Navigating Change vs. Embracing Transformation: Three Vital Tools

Navigating Change vs. Embracing Transformation: Three Vital Tools

?It’s been quite a few weeks of transition.? For those that may not know, I announced my departure from Microsoft and plans to join Equinix. I have been overwhelmed with the outpouring of support and kind words that I aspire to continue to earn.? This time in between big career moments gave me space to think about how I am transforming personally and professionally.??

I have used my time to rest, recharge, reflect taking my own advice from last summer. (26) How to "ROI" your holiday break | LinkedIn

In my time to think, the theme of transformation has been at the top of my mind.? I saw a quote that struck me that “change is inevitable, but transformation is by conscious choice." This inspired me to pause and think about what tools I have in my toolbox for transformation, and three jumped out to me.

1. A Strong Personal Foundation

Change: It’s like a gust of wind that sweeps through our lives unexpectedly. We react, adapt, and sometimes struggle to find our footing. ?

Transformation: It begins within. A strong personal foundation acts as an anchor—a place of clarity and mental grounding. When I’m centered, I’m ready to weather anything coming my way. ?I have learned that this centering requires space for mental well-being, practicing mindfulness, and cultivating self-awareness. When I am clear-headed, I can create space to think critically, challenge myself, and engage with others constructively.

So what have I done the last few weeks?? I focused on my physical health, my mental well-being, connecting and grounding with my children, husband, and aging parents in person.? And connecting with my oldest and dearest friends. ?I also am trying to establish a regular meditation practice, and I’m learning new habits are sometimes hard to form.? I also dove into books as I regularly do for fun and learning. More on this topic soon.

2. The Power of Belonging and Respect

Change: It can isolate us, leaving us feeling adrift. But transformation thrives in community.

Transformation: Flourishing requires connection. Being part of a team- that acknowledges your own unique lived experience--provides a sense of belonging. In this space, diverse perspectives collide, sparking creativity and growth. Respect for each other’s viewpoints becomes the glue that binds us together.

So what have I done the last few weeks? I had the pleasure my last days at Microsoft, to spend time mentoring and sharing my own best practices with the Military ERG. Listening to the Q&A made me think about how I can commit more time going forward to this community. I took the time to watch the various speakers and videos now available from the Ability Summit sponsored by Microsoft. I highly recommend for all leaders but in particular those in technology. ?I’ve been celebrating Women’s History Month along with so many of you. It’s a great time to reflect on the amazing role models today and in history, and the work ahead. In particular I spent time speaking with those new to the working mom challenges and how many conversations persist generation to generation.? I also look forward to building in time in the weeks ahead reconnecting with new communities. ?I’m always looking for perspectives that enhance how teams can tackle opportunities and tap into the full talent and potential in the world. More on this topic soon.

3. Embracing Imperfection with Courage

Change: It can make us fearful of failure. But transformation invites us to dance with imperfection.

Transformation: It’s about daring greatly. As many on my team will attest, I lean in and embrace my flaws and vulnerabilities, I find it terrifying at times, but it really is my practice of being authentic. Publicly acknowledging mistakes and setbacks creates a culture of learning and resilience.

So what have I done the last few weeks? I shared my reasons for daring greatly, and my real passion for being part of Equinix at this consequential moment in technology. ?Looking ahead as I learn new things, I’ll practice often “asking the dumb question”. For my final weeks of break between roles I’m focusing on reenergizing and embracing the opportunity to introduce myself to a whole group of new people and share all the experiences, successes and mistakes (so others can learn).

?

In conclusion, change is inevitable, but transformation is a conscious choice. ?With the world of technology, we have a choice every day to lean into the change or lean into the transformation. I am sure you will agree the second choice is a better bet!
