As of January 21, 2024, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has marked a significant development in the revision of ISO 9001. The process has advanced to the 20.60 stage, termed as the "Close of Comment Period," with a Working Draft (WD) shared among Technical Committee members.
Behind the scenes, the revision of ISO 9001 is being handled by Technical Committee TC 176. This committee plays a pivotal role in shaping the standard, ensuring it meets the evolving needs of industries and organizations worldwide.
Unpacking the Working Draft (WD) - First Formal Step in the Revision
The Working Draft (WD) released at the 20.60 stage serves as the initial formal step in the ISO standards revision process. Shared with all technical committee members, this draft sets the foundation for further development. While it is a critical milestone, the journey towards the final standard involves traversing through subsequent stages such as Committee Draft (CD), Draft International Standard (DIS), and Final Draft International Standard (FDIS).
Although the Working Draft (WD) marks a crucial point in the revision, there are still several stages to navigate before the ISO 9001 standard becomes official. Committee Draft (CD), Draft International Standard (DIS), and Final Draft International Standard (FDIS) await, each contributing to the refinement and validation of the standard. Stay tuned for updates as ISO 9001 progresses on its journey towards the next era of quality management.
