According to this theory, regional cooperation fosters economic development, political stability, and environmental sustainability by promoting trade liberalization, cross-border partnerships, and joint governance mechanisms. By applying the principles of regional integration theory, Foshan and GBA cities can enhance their capacity to address environmental challenges collectively and achieve sustainable development goals (Hettne et al., 2000).

In conclusion, regional integration within the Greater Bay Area presents ample opportunities for Foshan to enhance environmental protection, drive sustainable development, and foster collective action on shared sustainability goals. By leveraging the benefits of collaboration, addressing challenges, and aligning with theoretical frameworks of regional integration, Foshan can lead in promoting environmental sustainability in the GBA.

Summary

Foshan faces significant environmental challenges such as pollution, resource constraints, and complexities in policy coordination. Industrial emissions, untreated wastewater, and habitat loss have led to air and water pollution, biodiversity decline, and public health risks (Chen et al., 2021; Li & Wang, 2020). Limited funding, technology gaps, and natural resource depletion hinder sustainability efforts (Chen & Liu, 2021; Tan & Zhang, 2020). The multi-jurisdictional governance structure of the Greater Bay Area complicates policy harmonization across agencies (Wu & Chen, 2020).

To address these challenges, Foshan is pursuing innovative solutions like green technologies, nature-based approaches, and circular economy models to reduce emissions, conserve biodiversity, and enhance resource efficiency (Zheng & Wang, 2021; Guo & Wang, 2020; Li & Liu, 2018). Collaboration and knowledge sharing through cross-sector partnerships, forums, and training programs foster synergies, best practice exchange, and capacity building for environmental governance (Li & Wu, 2021; Cheng & Zhang, 2020).

Foshan has unique opportunities as part of the Greater Bay Area initiative, leveraging its strategic location, manufacturing strengths, and cultural assets to drive sustainable growth, eco-friendly production, and green tourism (Chen & Zhang, 2021). Regional integration within the GBA enables cooperation, resource sharing, and coordinated action on shared environmental goals, backed by empirical evidence and regional integration theory principles (European Commission, 2021; Hettne et al., 2000).

By harnessing innovation, collaboration, and regional synergies, Foshan can play a vital role in promoting environmental protection and sustainable development within the dynamic Greater Bay Area.
