Navigating the Challenges of Fatherhood: Lessons from 'The Crown'
Yes, I watch The Crown. Not only do I watch it, I wait for a clearing of time in my life and binge it aggressively. I don't have a particularly deep care or affinity for the Royal Family since Diana and Meghan, but life lessons often come wrapped in mystery and this TV series sits up alongside The Wire, Sopranos, Suits and Billions as some of my favourite TV ever made. This time I was moved by Season 6, Episode 5: Willsmania and I found a wonderful moment that created a warm and tingly feeling but not tears.
Introduction: The Universal Struggle of Father-Son Relationships
In this poignant episode of 'The Crown,' the focus shifts to Prince Charles's struggle to connect with his sons, William and Harry, following Princess Diana's death. Amidst royal duties and public scrutiny, Charles grapples with his role as a father. The episode highlights his consistent efforts to rebuild their strained relationship, despite various challenges. Seeking advice from emotionally intelligent confidantes, including Camilla Parker Bowles, and drawing wisdom from the Queen and Prince Philip, Charles endeavours to break the cycle of emotional distance that has characterised royal fatherhood. The episode is a deep dive into the complexities of father-son dynamics within the royal family.
This theme, particularly evident in the depiction of Prince Charles’ efforts to connect with his sons, William and Harry, holds valuable lessons for fathers everywhere. The first thing to observe is that if you have two children, you will know they are never the same for good or for bad and one child will give you challenges in different ways this particular challenge is presented by William and his anger and frustration at his father doting on him while not feeling the affinity.
1. The Art of Persistence in Fatherhood
The series underlines the importance of consistent efforts in rebuilding and strengthening father-son bonds. It shows that a father’s persistent attempts to reach out, irrespective of immediate responses, are crucial in mending strained relationships. This aspect of fatherhood, rooted in resilience, is a significant takeaway from the show.
2. Embracing Emotional Intelligence
Charles’ interactions in the series reflect the need for fathers to seek guidance from emotionally intelligent figures. These interactions symbolise the broader importance of understanding and empathising with one's children, a vital aspect of modern fatherhood.
3. Gleaning Wisdom from Experience
The narrative also emphasises the value of learning from the wisdom and experience of elders. It showcases how drawing on the insights of more experienced figures can offer valuable perspectives in navigating the complexities of father-son relationships.
4. Leveraging Influential Voices
The show highlights the strategy of involving respected figures in a child’s life to facilitate better communication and understanding. This approach, while depicted in a royal context, applies to any father seeking to deepen his relationship with his children.

Breaking Down Emotional Barriers: A Formula for Connection
In my experience with fathers and men, I suggest a formula for progress in father-son relationships: Authenticity multiplied by consistency, divided by time. This formula encapsulates the essence of emotional investment and patience required for fathers to build and maintain strong bonds with their sons.
Conclusion: A Reflection on Modern Fatherhood
Though set against the backdrop of royal life, 'The Crown' provides valuable insights into the universal challenges and rewards of fatherhood. The series serves as a reminder of the enduring impact fathers have on their sons' lives and the importance of continuous effort, empathy, and understanding in nurturing these vital relationships.
