Navigating Career Transitions: How to Thrive in Your Next Chapter

Navigating Career Transitions: How to Thrive in Your Next Chapter

When I sold my first company in 2016, I felt as if I stood before a blank canvas, with endless possibilities stretching out before me.

For most of my adult life, I had worn the hats of Founder and CEO of Making Cents International, the social enterprise I launched at 26.

By the time I was 44, I was ready for a new chapter—but what would that look like?

Fast forward eight years, and my journey has been nothing short of transformative.

I have cultivated a global network of 25,000 passionate global development and humanitarian aid professionals committed to impactful leadership. I now teach at one of the top business schools in the U.S., I have a book on the horizon, and I proudly serve on the global Board of Governors for Junior Achievement Worldwide, an NGO that has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

To some, it might seem like I had a master plan to craft a well-constructed “portfolio career.”?

However, that is not how it felt during the transition.

It wasn’t until the day after my exit that I could seriously consider what was next. Until that moment, I was fully immersed in my role as CEO, juggling the confidential details of the sale of my company while being present for my two young daughters and husband.

At that moment, I only had vague ideas of what I wanted to do next.

Thrive in Your Next Chapter

Now, eight years into this career transition, my advice for others who find themselves in a similar position is this: If you want to successfully navigate new spaces and roles, consider the following steps:

  1. Gain clarity on your aspirations: Reflect on your goals, identify the experiences you'd like to build upon, and recognize what you’re ready to let go of.
  2. Intentionally expand your network: Connect with like-minded individuals who share your aspirations and can provide support.
  3. Assess your transferable skills: Identify the skills you already possess, discover which new skills you need, and outline a plan for development.
  4. Cultivate a mindset of curiosity: Embrace humility and become comfortable with change, setting yourself up for personal and professional growth.

Introducing the Next Chapter Accelerator

I’ve recently noticed many friends and colleagues in their late 40s and 50s expressing a desire to embark on their next chapter. With my recent lessons in mind, I was inspired to co-create the Next Chapter Accelerator with Lisa Neuberger Fernandez .

Lisa and I connected in 2010 during one of my global youth leadership conferences. Recently, she transitioned from a successful 25-year career as a social “intrapreneur” at a Fortune Global 500 company, as she sought to explore new horizons.

This six-month program is designed for purpose-driven women leaders with 20+ years of high-impact careers, eager to chart a meaningful path forward in their lives.

What you can expect

  • Shape your path with joy and support: Take meaningful steps toward realizing your vision.
  • Enhance your leadership impact: Excel in areas such as board leadership, thought leadership, and conscious leadership.
  • Forge lifelong friendships: Join a global community of women who share similar goals and a desire to learn and grow together.

The Ultimate “Walk and Talk”

The program kicks off with a transformative walking retreat on the Camino de Santiago in Spain, October 2-5, 2024. This four-day journey of self-discovery will help you set goals and build relationships with like-minded women.

During our transitions, Lisa and I supported each other through “walking and talking.” This combination of movement and conversation sparked new ideas; walking in nature rejuvenates the brain, enhancing conceptual thinking and sustained attention.

And for those unable to join for the walking retreat there's a virtual kick off designed to build connection with fellow cohort members.

Virtual Masterclasses

The program continues with monthly online Master Classes led by global experts from our Advisory Circle. These workshops will cover essential themes, including:

  • How to secure corporate and NGO board positions
  • Advancing your thought leadership through writing, teaching, social media
  • Cultivating the mindsets and skill sets necessary to embrace change

Are You Ready to Join the Inaugural Cohort?

If now feels like the right time to start intentionally planning your next chapter, and if the idea of joining a cohort of inspiring, diverse women resonates with you, consider joining Lisa and I on the Camino in October 2024 and/or for the six-month virtual Next Chapter Accelerator that runs through March 2025.

This inaugural cohort is limited to just 12 participants. Be sure to secure your place by September 5, 2024

Warmly,

Fiona
