Navigating a career transition in your twenties: How a South African Black Woman found herself within Renewable Energy in Norway

Navigating a career transition in your twenties: How a South African Black Woman found herself within Renewable Energy in Norway

Amidst the towering skyscrapers and the constant buzz of city life in London, I found myself at a crossroads. From the vibrant streets of Durban, South Africa, my journey had brought me to the world of audit in London. However, I felt like I was navigating a road that was laid out for someone else. The path of pursuing a career in external audit in the bustling financial hub no longer resonated with me. It was then that my passion for renewable energy sparked a new and unknown adventure.

Leaving London was not easy. It had become my home, a place where I had made friendships and had envisioned I would build a career. Yet, deep within me, there was a longing for something more – a desire for something different, something more meaningful and a break away from the incessant ‘buzz’. With a diminished interest in traditional audit work and a strong enthusiasm for renewable energy, I decided to take a chance on Norway, embarking on a journey that would redefine both my professional and personal life.

My transition into the renewable energy sector was exciting but had its own challenges. The cultural business differences between South Africa, England, and Norway, and the language served as a constant reminder of my status as an outsider, prompting questions of identity and belonging. As a black woman in a predominantly white industry, I found myself constantly striving to reaffirm my sense of self-worth and to remind myself that I belonged: doing the work that I do, living the life I live – and actually enjoying it.

In my new role, I found a sense of purpose that transcended the confines of who I had always believed I was destined to be as a traditional CA(SA) in ‘corporate’. Surrounded by like-minded individuals passionate about sustainability, I found a supportive community dedicated to making a positive impact on the environment, and open to accepting my unique perspective in life and accepting me into the broader network. Together, we work towards making energy production and investments more sustainable, driven by a shared commitment to building a better future.

Despite the challenges of adapting to a new environment and navigating a foreign country, I have learned to prioritise self-care and creative outlets as sources of my strength and revitalisation. Through moments of reflection and gratitude, I realised the importance of embracing change and seizing opportunities for growth – everybody is just figuring it out and learning as they go. Additionally, immersing myself in Norwegian culture (taking saunas, swimming in the fjord, hiking, embracing ‘hygge’ and even skiing :-D) played a pivotal role in cultivating meaningful relationships and integrating into society, thereby enhancing my journey, and strengthening my gratitude for this newfound phase of my life.

Today, as I reflect on my journey from South Africa to Norway, I am filled with a profound sense of gratitude and humility. I recognise that although my story is one of perhaps many, it’s still mine. I am grateful for the opportunities I’ve had, the network I have formed, and I hope to inspire others to take a leap where possible and let your life find you – because it is always looking for you.
