"Navigating Business Anxiety Across Different Phases of Entrepreneurship."

"Navigating Business Anxiety Across Different Phases of Entrepreneurship."

Have you ever felt like, during your entrepreneurial journey, you were navigating the rolling waves of business?

Various business phases can evoke a spectrum of anxieties.

As someone who primarily supports service-based entrepreneurs with online ventures, I've observed this firsthand across different stages of business development.?

Most of my clients are in the Start-Up and Growth phases.

However, I have worked with clients in the Idea and Maturity phase.?

Something I noticed, is that each business phase presents distinct challenges that demand unique skills and strategies. New level of business anxiety unlocked!

It's fascinating to observe how the challenges shift, from the solitary journey of a startup solopreneur to the intricate dance of a CEO leading a team or a founder negotiating with investors.

Sometimes entrepreneurs have to mentally catch up to their business growth, which can create some emotional turbulence.?

What's intriguing is the common struggle I've noticed among CEOs who cling to their solopreneur mindset, trying to micromanage every aspect instead of empowering their team.?

This stems from a fear of delegating, fearing that their team won't perform as well as them, or anxiety about meeting client expectations and securing contracts, which could spell financial disaster.

Imagine the anxiety around losing a 150K or 250K business, this can be detrimental to their operations budget or it could mean someone’s not getting paid.?

To address these challenges effectively, it's crucial to recognize how business anxiety manifests at each stage and tailor support accordingly.

Here’s How Business Anxiety Impacts Each Business Phase:

I’ll share my recommendation for support at each phase:

Idea Phase:

  • In the idea phase, entrepreneurs may experience anxiety related to the uncertainty of their business concept's viability.
  • They might worry about whether their idea will resonate with their target audience or if there's a market need for their product or service.
  • Anxiety may also arise from the fear of failure or the pressure to come up with a groundbreaking idea that sets them apart from competitors.
  • Not having validation or positive feedback.

Recommendation: I recommend attending free and paid courses or workshops. Your city and state should have organizations for entrepreneurs like SCORE. org or SBA. gov. These were very helpful to me during my idea phase. You don’t need a business coach, if you just have an idea, unless you’re ready to launch. You can launch a beta program to test your idea.?

Startup Phase:

  • During the startup phase, entrepreneurs often face anxiety related to the practical aspects of launching their business.
  • They may feel overwhelmed by the multitude of tasks involved, such as product development, marketing, and fundraising.
  • Financial concerns, such as securing funding and managing cash flow, can also contribute to anxiety during this phase.
  • Additionally, the fear of not achieving initial growth targets or facing unexpected challenges can heighten anxiety levels for startup founders.

Recommendation:? I recommend joining a coaching program, taking courses, and attending conferences. You should have business credit and be able to bring in money from your business to pay for these. Do your research before investing. Have a consultation session, attend an event, or take a webinar with them.?

Growth Phase:

  • In the growth phase, entrepreneurs may experience anxiety related to scaling their business and managing rapid expansion.
  • They may worry about whether their infrastructure and resources can support increased demand for their products or services.
  • Anxiety may arise from the pressure to sustain growth momentum and meet the expectations of investors, stakeholders, and customers.
  • Managing a growing team and maintaining company culture can also contribute to feelings of anxiety during this phase.
  • Dealing with employee retention, hiring and firing.

Recommendation: I recommend joining a coaching program, taking courses, and attending conferences. At this phase, you may benefit from investing in personalized 1:1 coaching. You may prefer working with the coach one on one, to discuss your specific issues that are personal to you and your business. Or join a mastermind group to navigate specific challenges alongside fellow entrepreneurs. You’ll have access to the expertise of other entrepreneurs in your mastermind group.?

Maturity Phase:

  • In the maturity phase, entrepreneurs may face anxiety related to maintaining relevance and competitiveness in a saturated market.
  • They may worry about stagnation or decline in sales, customer retention, or market share.
  • Anxiety can arise from the need to innovate and adapt to changing industry trends and consumer preferences to stay ahead of the competition.
  • Managing the transition from a startup mindset to a more established company culture can also be a source of anxiety for entrepreneurs in the maturity phase.
  • As the company grows, it requires more staff training, workplace conflict resolution, wellness programs, diversity equity, and inclusion.?

Recommendation: I recommend hiring consultants during this phase. You may prefer working one-on-one or in exclusive groups. You may also want to consider getting board members. Finding mentors who’ve retired or successfully sold/exited businesses have a wealth of experience. Accessing all forms of support is beneficial.?

Business Journal Prompts:

  1. Reflect on a recent business challenge that triggered anxiety. How did you respond, and what did you learn from the experience?
  2. Identify one area of your business where anxiety tends to surface frequently. What steps can you take to address and manage this anxiety more effectively?
  3. Envision your ideal support network for navigating business anxiety. Who would be part of this network, and how would they contribute to your growth and well-being?
