Navigating Burnout in the Workplace

Navigating Burnout in the Workplace

In recent years, the topic of burnout has been at the forefront of many conversations in the workplace. With the ongoing pandemic, this conversation has only become more pressing as many of us have been forced to navigate the new normal of working from home, balancing caregiving responsibilities, and dealing with the emotional toll of social isolation.

But are we at a turning point with burnout?

There are a few signs that suggest we may be. Firstly, burnout is being recognized as a real and valid condition by the World Health Organization (WHO). In 2019, the WHO officially recognized burnout as an "occupational phenomenon" and defined it as "a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed."

This recognition is a step in the right direction, as it acknowledges that burnout is not just a personal weakness, but rather a systemic issue that needs to be addressed by employers and organizations.

Additionally, there is growing awareness and conversations around self-care and mental health in the workplace. Employers are starting to realize that taking care of their employees' well-being is not just the right thing to do, but it's also good for business. Companies that prioritize employee well-being tend to have lower turnover rates, increased productivity, and a more positive work culture.

However, we still have a long way to go. Despite the progress that has been made, many people still feel stigmatized for talking about burnout and mental health. Moreover, many companies are still not providing adequate support for their employees to manage stress and prevent burnout.

So, are we at a turning point with burnout? While there is certainly progress being made, we still have work to do to ensure that everyone has access to the support and resources they need to prevent and manage burnout.

As women, we are often expected to be Superwoman and do it all, but we need to remember that our well-being should be a priority. Let's continue to raise awareness and advocate for change, so we can create a healthier and more sustainable work environment for all.
