It was a very early morning in midsummer. A sense of excitement and nervousness filled me as I prepared for my scuba diving adventure to obtain my certification. The clear blue waters, the vibrant coral reefs, making it a paradise for diving.

Among the various challenges presented during the course, one stood out as particularly intimidating for me - the test of navigating in the vast, deep, open blue waters.

Blue water diving requires divers to rely solely on their navigation skills to find their way. As there are no reference points or visible landmarks, nor fancy equipment. Just you and the big blue sea.

As I dived into the depths, the comfort of familiar surroundings quickly vanished, and a profound sense of isolation overcame me. All around, the vastness of the blue stretched infinitely, with no signs of life or points of reference to guide my way. It was the first time being in the "real thing", outside the comfort of the class.

Fear and uncertainty threatened to grip me, while I did my best to focus on what I learned during my training. It was an exercise in patience and focus, knowing that even the slightest miscalculation could be a problem for me. I was no longer in my element. I felt the familiar urge to run, but I was aware that it was not possible.

As minutes felt like hours, I tried to stay calm, my inner voice repeated the process. "Breathe... Now release the bubbles; they will guide you upwards...". And slowly I realized "hey, I'm ok, I know what to do next"...

We all encounter situations in life where we must venture into uncharted territory. It might not involve diving deep into the ocean, but the feeling of uncertainty is universal.

So, how do we navigate the unknown with confidence and resilience?

It is not surprising that there is no single magic solution that fits all, especially when the emphasis is on the "how." Different personalities often require distinct strategies to handle it successfully. For instance, proposing that someone perceives the unknown as an opportunity might not resonate if they regard it as a risk. The degree of uncertainty that we can tolerate depends upon our personal comfort level. Some of us try to avoid uncertainty, some of us tolerate it, and a few of us actively embrace it.

Regardless of our personality, being aware of these qualities and cultivating them could help us navigate unpredictable situations.

Understanding Our Nature

Effectively experiencing and handling the unknown requires cultivating specific qualities and gaining a deep understanding of oneself. These qualities act as the internal compass guiding us through when the outside looks and feels like "blue water".

  1. Trust in Yourself. The foundation of navigating uncertainty lies in recognizing our strengths. Without this awareness, fear and self-doubt can quickly dominate and hinder our progress. Trusting in our abilities and judgment is crucial. Whether we are aware of it or not, we constantly engage in self-talk. This internal dialogue is mostly unconscious and often filled with negativity, trapping us in a cycle of doubt, harming the relationship we have with ourselves. By identifying these negative voices and consciously replacing them with a more positive and productive narrative, we can break free from this paralysis and take action.
  2. Readiness. We must be prepared for the challenges that come with unknown territories. This involves gathering knowledge, enhancing skills, and having a well-thought-out plan in place. We live in an age where knowledge can be easily obtained. The internet hosts the world's finest educators, and they are frequently available at no cost. Choosing to remain ignorant is a decision.
  3. Creativity. Uncharted territory often lacks clear reference points, requiring us to change what we think is possible. When we are faced with the unknown, it can be challenging to know where to start. However, as you may have already guessed, creative problem-solving can prove to be an invaluable advantage.In fact, research has shown that creative problem-solving can help us to think in a unique way and come up with innovative solutions to complex problems. One way to approach creative problem-solving is to break down the problem into smaller, more manageable parts and then brainstorm possible solutions for each part. Ultimately, the key is to be open-minded and willing to explore new possibilities. Always asking, "What is the first step?" By taking that initial step and being open to experimentation and trying original approaches, we often uncover solutions that we never thought achievable.
  4. Resilience is the ability to bounce back from setbacks and adapt to changing circumstances. Resilience is essential for overcoming obstacles in unfamiliar territory. Developing resilience involves practicing coping skills, reframing negative experiences, and cultivating a growth mindset. There are numerous ways to build resilience, such as finding a sense of purpose, managing stress, and seeking support from others. Resilient people refrain from adopting a victim mentality and instead seek solutions to address the issue at hand. Even though the situation may be beyond their control, they maintain their focus on achieving a positive result.
  5. Adaptability is the ability to adjust to new conditions and situations, making it a crucial skill in the fast-paced and constantly evolving world of today. Our capacity to adapt and flourish in various situations is a defining characteristic of our nature.According to a research article in the Harvard Business Review, adaptability has emerged as the new competitive advantage. The article highlights that conventional strategies are based on the assumption of a stable and predictable world. However, globalization, new technologies, and enhanced transparency have disrupted the business landscape. In this era of risk and instability, adaptability has become a crucial determinant of success in times of transformation and systemic change.

Different Approaches to Dealing with Uncertainty

People have different approaches to the unfamiliar. Can you identify yourself with any of them?

  1. Embracing Uncertainty: Some individuals actively embrace uncertainty. They see it as a chance for growth and adventure. These individuals tend to exhibit high levels of trust in themselves, readiness to tackle challenges, and an innate creativity in problem-solving. Resilience is their strength, and they adapt readily to changing circumstances.
  2. Tolerating Uncertainty: People are comfortable with a certain level of uncertainty but prefer to have a safety net. They trust their abilities but may not actively seek out unknown situations. They are typically prepared and resilient, making them adaptable when faced with unexpected changes.
  3. Avoiding Uncertainty: Some people are averse to uncertainty and prefer the comfort of the known. They may find it challenging to trust themselves in unfamiliar situations and may not be as prepared or resilient when faced with uncertainty.

We can all become stronger and more capable through life's challenges. When facing unknown paths, it is important to remember that the less traveled route often leads to the most rewarding destinations.

consider the following,

  1. Learn New Skills: Continuously expand your knowledge and skills, ensuring you're well-equipped for whatever challenges arise.
  2. Know Yourself: Understand your comfort level with uncertainty and work on building trust in your abilities.
  3. Make Changes: Embrace creativity and adaptability in your problem-solving approach. Be open to change and willing to adjust your plans when necessary.
  4. Stretch Your Boundaries: Gradually expose yourself to increasingly uncertain situations, allowing yourself to grow more comfortable with the unknown. It's an infinite game, and so are the boundaries.
  5. Keep Going. Ultimately, the key to navigating uncharted waters is taking that first step, even when it's shrouded in uncertainty. Have faith in yourself, stay ready, think creatively, bounce back from setbacks, and adapt as needed.

The journey is often as valuable as the destination. It is in these uncharted waters that we discover our nature and unlock our potential for growth and transformation. Find your own way to prepare, learn, understand yourself, find joy, make changes, push your limits, and keep going.
