Navigating the Bloodbath: A Review of Artistic Intent vs. Graphic Execution

The Substance: A Review

I only knew Demi Moore was in it - that’s it. I had no bloody idea, pun intended, that I was diving headfirst into an over-the-top bloodbath filled with scenes that made me instinctively cover my eyes and ears. How did I miss that this was a horror movie? Oh well. While the theme wasn't exactly my cup of tea, I can't deny the impressive craftsmanship of the camera work, editing, and production design. The visual storytelling created an atmosphere that, despite the chaos, was undeniably captivating.

It all started innocently enough, with unique camera angles, inventive editing, and striking production and set design - all centered around our main character, Elizabeth Sparkle. I was absolutely mesmerized, trying to soak up every moment of the film; it was that captivating. I can’t recall ever experiencing such an artistic approach before - it was truly incredible and unique. The visuals pulled me in, making me eager to see where this intriguing journey would lead, even as the theme began to take a darker turn. I still had no idea it would soon transform into a horror show and a bloody mess. By the end, I realized it was far too late to leave, but I simply couldn’t watch any longer; I found myself closing my eyes and covering my ears for most of it.

It was the most conflicted feeling I have ever had - a contrast between the captivating beginning and the bloody finale. I found myself torn between admiration for the artistry and a visceral aversion to the turmoil that unfolded. It was as if I was watching two different films - one rich in creativity and promise, and the other drowning in bodily fluids and over-the-top gory scenes. This push and pull left me wrestling with my overall experience, unsure of how to reconcile the beauty I witnessed with the horror that followed.

I appreciate the attempt to depict the conflict many of us, particularly women, face with societal beauty standards and the pressure to maintain a youthful appearance. I think the “Monster” they created was the right vehicle to deliver this message. While the intention is clear, the execution was too graphic, leaving me to question whether the horror elements truly served the narrative. Each to their own; I’m sure this film was stellar for those who enjoy diving into nonstop scenes of blood and gore.

Nonetheless, Demi Moore, Dennis Quaid, Margaret Qualley, and many other talented actors delivered strong performances that added depth to the film. Despite my reservations about the horror aspects of the story, I found moments of genuine connection and engagement in their performances. I just wish it had been less violent and bloody…
