Navigating AuDHD and FOMO: Embracing Balance and Self-Care

Navigating AuDHD and FOMO: Embracing Balance and Self-Care

Before my Autism Diagnosis I struggled with FOMO, and again after. my autism diagnosis I still struggle with FOMO - However the reasoning is more apparent to me now. Because in the process of unmasking my energy and tolerance is lower than what it previously would have been which I have read to be extremely normal. But it does lend me to wonder, in a world filled with vibrant celebrations and cultural experiences, being neurodiverse can present unique challenges. As I reflect on my recent Lunar New Year adventure with my son, who shares my neurodiverse journey with AuDHD, it brings to light the delicate balance between the fear of missing out (FOMO) and the sensory challenges we face.

While the lions, dragons, and drumming initially sparked excitement, it wasn't long before the sensory overload became overwhelming for my son and, consequently, for myself. It's a fine line we navigate, recognizing the importance of pushing beyond our comfort zones while respecting our need for self-care.

As the saying goes, "A ship in the harbour is safe, but that is not what ships are made for." Our neurodiverse journey may lead us to prefer the comfort of a familiar routine, but by avoiding new experiences, we risk missing out on incredible opportunities for growth and connection.

The experience prompted me to reflect on my own triggers and sensitivities, realizing that, like my son, I, too, need moments of rest and decompression. Through this awareness, I am learning to embrace the balance between the excitement of exploration and the peace that comes from honouring my own needs.

In the past, I might not have noticed the impact on my well-being, but Daniel's keen observation has heightened my awareness. I've come to understand that self-kindness involves saying no and prioritizing rest when needed. By doing so, I am better equipped to show up as the supportive parent he deserves.

Our neurodiverse journey is a continuous learning process, teaching us not only about our unique challenges but also about the importance of self-compassion. Through this journey, we discover that true empowerment lies in finding harmony between embracing life's opportunities and honouring our individual needs.
