Navigating Apple's New HTML5 Update: The Art of Crafting Your Index File

Last time, we unpacked Apple’s update in Section 4.7.4 of their guidelines, giving developers a clearer path for HTML5 streaming in apps. This time around, we're not just telling, we're showing. Buckle up, developers—let's get hands-on with crafting an index file that meets Apple's standards without pulling your hair out!

The Key to Compliance: Simplifying Your HTML5 Game Index

Apple’s index file requirement can seem daunting. The thought of listing your suite of mini-games with comprehensive metadata might sound like an intricate dance of details. In our last article, we discussed an example setup that, while helpful, turned out to be more complex than necessary. So, let's simplify.

Taking a page from successful real-world examples, here’s how you should ideally format your index entries:

  • Name of Game: LissiLand Game Name X
  • Direct Link/Universal Link to the Game: This should drop Apple directly into the game

Here's two developers that got right:

  1. GamePortal's HTML5 Hub: A simple, straightforward list where each game title is a clickable link that leads directly to the game. No fuss, no muss.
  2. HTML5 Games Showcase: Another clean example, providing direct links embedded in each game’s title.

These examples highlight that simplicity not only aids in compliance but also enhances user experience. Direct links ensure that reviewers can access your games without navigating through unnecessary complexity, a crucial factor given Apple’s emphasis on straightforward, universal access within apps.

So, developers, as you prepare your index file, think less about packing in every piece of metadata and more about clear, direct paths to your content. Keep it simple, keep it compliant, and keep it user-friendly.

Have thoughts or questions on this approach? I’d love to hear from you at [email protected]. Let’s make sure your next app update is smooth sailing through Apple’s review process!

P.S. Make sure to not index this file with social media. You could also hide it, if you are doing it on a web server. The best option would be to list this in a document and attach it to your submission. This will be in the same area you include the test credentials and details when submitting to Apple.
