Navigating the AI Era: Insights from the PM & PMO Conference BRIDGE 2024

The PM & PMO Conference BRIDGE 2024, one of the largest project management events in the Baltic States, once again gathered professionals from across the globe to explore the challenges and opportunities shaping the future of project management. Organised by Project Management United since 2021, this year's conference had a clear focus: the intersection of project management and artificial intelligence (AI), and how both worlds are colliding in ways that promise transformation—but also bring uncertainty.

As a team dedicated to innovation, collaboration, and excellence, our own Project Manager, Malik K. attended this year. The wealth of knowledge shared has left a lasting impact, particularly on how AI is poised to reshape the project management landscape.

The Conference Theme: AI, Learning, and Surviving in the Age of AI

The overarching theme of the PM & PMO Conference BRIDGE 2024 revolved around adapting to the realities of AI. While there’s a palpable sense of excitement around the benefits that AI can bring, especially in automation and decision-making, there’s also concern. One of the most pressing issues discussed was how AI advancements could potentially lead to widespread job displacement. As the conversation on the future of work deepens, project managers everywhere are asking: Will AI take my job?

This question was echoed throughout the conference, where expert speakers shared insights on how to balance the potential disruption of AI with proactive strategies for reskilling and upskilling.

Reskilling in the AI Era: A Holistic Approach

A standout session was led by Brigita Kaleckaite , who presented a unique perspective on how individuals can build better professional profiles in the age of AI. Drawing from the holistic Ginger’s pentagram model, Brigita highlighted the importance of a comprehensive approach to reskilling. Her method focuses on starting with two critical areas—"the body" and "the world"—as foundational corners of the pentagram.

By prioritising physical wellbeing and environmental awareness, she suggested, we can better position ourselves to absorb new knowledge and adapt to changing professional landscapes. The holistic model encourages a mindset shift: reskilling isn't just about technical proficiency but about nurturing a well-rounded, adaptable individual ready to meet the demands of AI-powered industries.

PMI Infinite: A New Era of AI Tools in Project Management

One of the most exciting product showcases came from Claudia Alcelay , who introduced the audience to PMI Infinite, an AI-powered tool developed by the Project Management Institute (PMI). While it shares similarities with ChatGPT in terms of functionality, PMI Infinite is purpose-built for the project management field. What sets it apart is its commitment to safeguarding sensitive project data—an essential concern for professionals dealing with confidential information.

Claudia Alcelay TALK

Unlike other AI models, PMI Infinite does not use user data to train its algorithm, meaning it provides a safe environment for handling real project-related information. As Claudia pointed out, this distinction will be crucial as more organisations explore AI-driven tools for project management. With tools like PMI Infinite, project managers can leverage AI while maintaining confidence that their sensitive project data remains secure.

The Impact of AI on Jobs: A Paradigm Shift?

Tomasz Grochowski presented some compelling statistics on the impact of AI on employment and shared his predictions for the future. According to his analysis, while many fear job losses due to AI automation, the reality may be more complex. He pointed out that we are on the brink of a significant demographic shift, with a population decline expected in many parts of the world. This could mean that job displacement caused by AI might, in fact, help balance the workforce shortages anticipated in the coming decades.

Tomasz Grochowski TALK

Grochowski’s perspective reframes the conversation: instead of AI taking away jobs, it could fill crucial gaps in industries struggling with a shrinking workforce. His talk offered a sense of cautious optimism, proposing that AI could play a critical role in maintaining productivity and efficiency as global demographics change.

Overcoming AI Implementation Challenges: Data Privacy and Trust

Anara Asylbekova also addressed the practical challenges of integrating AI into project management, especially in terms of data privacy and security. These concerns were front and centre in many discussions, as AI systems increasingly rely on vast amounts of data to make decisions. Ensuring that this data is protected is not only a technical challenge but also one that touches on issues of trust and transparency.

Anara Asylbekova TALK

Anara highlighted several ways AI can enhance project management processes, from scoring alternative data to generating forecasts and developing AI-enabled dashboards. However, she also raised a thought-provoking point: in many cases, people trust AI-driven decisions more than those made by humans. This shift in perception presents both an opportunity and a challenge for project managers—how do we balance human intuition with AI’s data-driven insights?

Key Takeaways: Preparing for the Future

As we reflect on the discussions from BRIDGE 2024, a few key themes stand out:

  • AI is here to stay, and its influence on project management will only grow. Tools like Jira, Notion, Trello, and Monday are already integrating AI features, though the true value of these additions is still under debate.
  • Job displacement due to AI is a concern, but the real question is how quickly this change will happen and what we can do to prepare. Tomasz Grochowski’s insights suggest that job losses might not be as catastrophic as some fear, especially if demographic trends offset them.
  • Reskilling and upskilling are essential. As Brigita Kaleckait?’s presentation underscored, professionals who take a holistic approach to learning and development will be better equipped to thrive in this AI-driven future.
  • Data privacy and security remain top priorities. As AI tools like PMI Infinite gain traction, ensuring the safe handling of project-related data will be crucial to their widespread adoption.

Questions for the Future

The PM & PMO Conference BRIDGE 2024 left us with many valuable insights but also with critical questions that the project management community will need to address:

  1. When will we see the first major wave of AI-driven job displacement in project management?
  2. What are the essential skills that project managers should cultivate to stay competitive in an AI-enhanced landscape?

As we continue to explore these questions, it's clear that AI will play a transformative role in shaping the future of project management. Our job, as project managers and innovators, is to ensure that we are ready to harness its potential while staying committed to the security, flexibility, and excellence that define our industry. Together, we will navigate these changes and emerge stronger, more capable, and more resilient.

Let’s stay prepared, adaptable, and ahead of the curve as we step into the AI-powered future of project management.
