Navigating ADHD in India: Our Family's Journey

Navigating ADHD in India: Our Family's Journey

As parents, we want nothing but the best for our children, especially in a developing country like India. When our teenage daughter was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), it was a journey of understanding, patience, and advocacy. In this article, I'll share our experience and how it changed us as parents.

The Signs Were There, But We Didn't Know What They Meant

Looking back, there were signs that something was not quite right with our daughter. She had trouble focusing in school, was easily distracted, and had a hard time staying organized. But we just thought she was a typical teenager and didn’t think much of it. It wasn't until her teachers brought up their concerns that we realized something more was going on.

Getting a Diagnosis and Understanding the Condition

Getting a diagnosis of ADHD in India can be a difficult and confusing process. Firstly, there is a lack of awareness and understanding of the condition among healthcare professionals in India. Many doctors may not be familiar with the latest diagnostic criteria and may rely on outdated information. This can lead to misdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis. Additionally, there can be a lack of access to specialists such as child psychiatrists and neuropsychologists, which can make getting an accurate diagnosis more challenging.

Furthermore, the process of getting a diagnosis for ADHD involves a combination of evaluations by a paediatrician, a psychologist, and a teacher. This multi-disciplinary approach is important for getting a comprehensive understanding of the child’s symptoms and the impact they have on the child’s life. However, this process can be time-consuming and can put a strain on families.?

Despite these challenges, getting a diagnosis for our daughter was a turning point for our family. It was like a weight had been lifted off of our shoulders. We finally understood what was causing our daughter's struggles, and we could start looking for ways to help her. We were able to access appropriate interventions and support that helped her manage her symptoms and improve her quality of life.

How ADHD Has Changed Us as Parents

Being the parents of a child with ADHD has taught us a lot about patience, understanding, and advocacy, especially in a country where mental health is not given much importance. We have had to learn new ways to communicate with our daughter and help her manage her symptoms. We have also had to educate ourselves and others about the condition and advocate for accommodations in school and other areas of her life.

The Importance of Therapy and Medication

Therapy has been crucial in helping our daughter manage her symptoms of ADHD. We have worked with a therapist who specializes in ADHD to develop strategies for managing symptoms at home and school. The therapist has helped our daughter learn coping mechanisms for her symptoms, such as time management and organization skills. She has also helped our daughter develop a positive self-image and improve her self-esteem, which had been negatively impacted by her struggles with ADHD.

However, finding a qualified therapist and the right medication can be difficult in India, as the availability and accessibility of mental health resources are limited. In rural areas, mental health services may not be available at all. And even in urban areas, the number of qualified mental health professionals is limited, and they may not have the specialized training to properly diagnose and treat ADHD. Additionally, access to medication can also be limited, as certain medications may not be available or may be too expensive for some families. This highlights the need for more widespread availability and accessibility of mental health resources in India.

The Need to Raise Awareness
One of the most important things we have learned as parents is the importance of raising awareness about ADHD in India. Despite the fact that ADHD is a common condition, there are still a lot of misunderstandings and stigma surrounding it. By sharing our story and educating others about the condition, we hope to break down these stereotypes and create a more understanding and supportive environment for families affected by ADHD.

Thank you for sharing your journey in diagnosing and managing ADHD for your daughter, Meeta. It takes courage to share such personal journeys. I am hoping this will help create more awareness about ADHD amongst parents and help manage it to create better quality of life for everyone involved. Thank you !

Reading the article took me back decades. It makes me so happy to know that your child has the best support system around her. Thank you for sharing your personal experience and bringing in more awareness. Context: After my adhd diagnosis at age 30, everything in my life just made sense. I've had a very difficult and traumatic academic experience. As a kid I was always punished for hyperactivity and/or being distracted by being "lazy despite being incredibly smart". Sadly neither my parents nor my teachers had the right exposure then. I found therapy and medications to be very helpful.
