It's becoming increasingly clear that the world is racing to establish regulations for this transformative technology. While this urgency is commendable, it also raises concerns about the need for a balanced and measured approach.
It is vital to emphasize the need for a measured speed in AI regulation. Rushing the process could inadvertently stifle innovation. Thus, a thoughtful and internationally coordinated approach is crucial. I have already written a short Open Letter to the United Nations Secretary-General calling for a "Measured Speed".
Here are the recent key developments in AI regulation globally that all happened in less than a week, which underscores the importance of thoughtful progress.
Oct 26 - United Nations AI Advisory Body
The United Nations recently introduced its AI Advisory Body, composed of experts from various fields. This move signifies the growing recognition of AI's societal impact and the need for global guidance.
Oct 30 - White House's Executive Order
Simultaneously, the White House issued an Executive Order underlining the United States' commitment to responsible AI development. This reaffirms the US's role in shaping AI governance.
OCT 30 - G7's International Principles
G7 leaders have agreed upon International Guiding Principles on AI and introduced a voluntary Code of Conduct for AI developers. This reflects the importance of international cooperation and shared values in AI governance.
