Ordinary Crew, Trainees, Culture, and Thinking Aloud

When onboard trainees come onboard, they experience a strong socialization process – they learn the rules of the ship. The rules of the ship are part of the culture and, as we know, culture is like an iceberg – only 10% is visible. How then does this socialization take place? “Too slowly” many experienced seafarers would say, maybe with a wink.

Learning the onboard culture could be supported, and sped up, by thinking aloud.

Dive deeper into the world of insightful reflections as Senior Lecturer Peter Bj?rkroth explores the significance of thinking aloud in various situations.

Student Spotlight: Geoffrey Kurui ?

Meet Geoffrey, whose origins trace back to Kenya. Geoffrey is studying for a Bachelor’s degree in Maritime Engineering, Maritime Technology at Novia UAS. His interest in maritime technology studies in Finland blossomed when he learned about the intriguing prospects within autonomous ship technology. He states that the history of Aboa Mare, coupled with cutting-edge technology and state-of-the-art simulators offered an irresistible academic landscape for him.

His favourite memory from the studies so far are the hands-on workshops where he had the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge to practical scenarios. Particularly the simulator tests were memorable, as they emphasized teamwork and individual proficiency. The onboard training experiences also stood out, as they provided a real-world perspective and a chance to apply what he had learned in a professional maritime setting. He adds that the guidance of knowledgeable and engaging lecturers also has been invaluable in shaping his educational journey.

In his free time, Geoffrey engages in various activities that balances his life. He mentions that he is an avid sports enthusiast, frequently participating in physical activities to stay fit, but he also participates in voluntary activities.

My passion for giving back to the community leads me to volunteer as an administrator for a non-governmental organization, where I contribute to philanthropic initiatives. Additionally, I enjoy exploring and learning about new technology trends and innovations to stay informed about the ever-evolving tech landscape.

Where do you see yourself working in the future, and why?

In the future, I envision myself starting my career as a marine engineer, where I can gain valuable hands-on experience in the maritime industry. As I accumulate knowledge and expertise, I aspire to transition to a role within an autonomous ship designing and development company. This career path aligns with my passion for innovative technology and the transformative potential of autonomous ships, offering the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge advancements in the field.

Do you have any advice for prospective students?

Certainly! My advice to prospective students is to warmly embrace the opportunity to study in a highly advanced maritime education institution. The internationality of the environment provides a rich and diverse learning experience. In addition, the proximity to harbours with large shipping companies like Viking Line and Tallink Silja, the historical significance of Turku as the first capital city, and its cultural attractions like Turku Castle, make it an ideal destination.

Geoffrey, may your future be as bright and promising as your academic journey has been! ?
