15 Strategies to Maintain Your Weight During the Holiday Season

  1. Be Mindful of Your Portions Watch your serving sizes to prevent overindulgence. Instead of loading your plate, opt for smaller portions that allow you to sample a variety of dishes.
  2. Focus on Protein and Fiber Fill your plate with lean proteins and fiber-rich foods. These nutrients help you feel satisfied longer, minimizing the desire to snack unnecessarily.
  3. Strategically Handle Social Events Before heading to gatherings, plan how you’ll approach the food options. Eating a healthy snack beforehand can help you make better choices when faced with holiday treats.
  4. Stick to Your Workout Routine Keep your exercise schedule consistent, even during busy times. Regular physical activity can help offset extra calories and boost your mood.
  5. Stay Hydrated Drinking water throughout the day can keep you feeling full and help you resist the temptation of snacking on high-calorie treats.
  6. Practice Smart Indulgence It’s perfectly fine to enjoy your favorite holiday foods! Just be mindful of your portions and balance indulgences with healthier choices throughout the day.
  7. Manage Stress Effectively The holidays can be overwhelming, leading to emotional eating. Find healthy outlets for stress relief, like meditation, yoga, or quality time with loved ones.
  8. Plan Your Meals Ahead Preparing meals in advance can help you avoid unhealthy last-minute choices. A well-thought-out meal plan keeps you on track, even on hectic days.
  9. Dispose of Excess Halloween Candy If you have leftover treats from Halloween, consider tossing them. Keeping tempting sweets out of sight can help you stick to healthier options.
  10. Prioritize Quality Sleep Make sure you’re getting enough restorative sleep. Lack of sleep can disrupt your metabolism and lead to increased cravings for unhealthy foods.
  11. Cook at Home More Often Home-cooked meals allow you to control ingredients and portions. Aim to prepare more meals at home during the holiday season to support your health goals.
  12. Embrace Mindful Eating Slow down and savor each bite. Mindful eating enhances your dining experience and helps you recognize when you’re satisfied.
  13. Limit Liquid Calories Be mindful of high-calorie drinks like sugary cocktails or festive eggnog. Opt for water or lower-calorie beverages to avoid unnecessary calorie consumption.
  14. Weigh Yourself Regularly Tracking your weight can help you stay accountable. Weigh yourself weekly to monitor your progress and make adjustments as needed.
  15. Be Kind to Yourself Remember that indulgence is a part of the holiday experience. Instead of feeling guilty, focus on consistency and making healthier choices moving forward.

If I showed up to family Christmas with a huge kale salad, the amount of judgment I'd get is unfathomable... which is why I'm doing it ??

Great tips! I appreciate that managing stress is included, as that can lead to poor choices. With the kiddos at home for two weeks, I'm carving out small windows for work, then large windows where I'm 100% committed to family and friends time, to be present. Gray space is where the stress is for me.

Such smart strategies, Sheri! They still allow (encourage!) you to enjoy the holidays but not go so overboard that you're regretting it afterwards.
