Navigate the evolving landscape - Digital Skills Passport

We interviewed Vanessa Wainwright, Founder of education marketplace Abodoo, after her participation in EIT Manufacturing Summit 2023 roundtable: “Human-Centered Manufacturing: Deep Tech Talent at the Heart of European Innovation”

“In our recent EIT Manufacturing Summit discussion, we delved into the crucial role that skills play in driving sustainable manufacturing innovation in Europe. A significant aspect emphasised during the discourse was the need for a mindset shift regarding skills. In advocating for this change, I highlighted the implementation of a groundbreaking solution – the Digital Skills Passport. This innovative passport not only places individuals in the spotlight but also enables them to showcase a comprehensive Skills Stack authenticated by educational providers. The primary focus here is on empowering diverse talent groups, ensuring inclusivity, and fostering fair discovery through a personalised learning journey.

Moreover, in the context of sustainable manufacturing, our spotlight extends beyond technical skills to encompass transversal skills essential for adaptability in a constantly evolving industry landscape. The Digital Skills Passport effectively addresses this broader need by providing a dynamic platform for individuals to display not only their technical prowess but also the human skills that make them invaluable contributors to sustainable innovation. This holistic approach reflects the evolving nature of professional identity, acknowledging the importance of a diverse set of skills in the manufacturing sector.

The EIT Manufacturing Summit served as a reaffirmation that skills are a potent asset. The Digital Skills Passport emerged not just as a representation of qualifications but as a solution that facilitates inclusive talent discovery. The emphasis on transversal skills, personalised development journeys, and industry-relevant learning strongly resonated with the audience. Importantly, it became evident that the Digital Skills Passport is not just a document; it's a gateway to a future where skills are at the forefront of professional identity.

Our key takeaway was the recognition of skills as a transformative force bridging the gap between industry and education. This collaborative effort aims to address existing skills shortages and create a sustainable ecosystem where no one is left behind, reversing the traditional narrative to ensure skills are the driving force behind professional progression.

Looking ahead to the future changes in the next 5 to 10 years, a transformative shift is imminent concerning sustainable manufacturing, innovation, and skills. Beyond individual career growth, we anticipate a surge in recognising the inherent value of skills data. This data holds the key to forecasting future sustainable manufacturing industry needs, steering curriculum development, and fostering a symbiotic relationship between education and industry. As we navigate the evolving landscape, the Digital Skills Passport stands as a beacon, guiding us toward a future where skills not only define personal success but also shape the trajectory of sustainable manufacturing on a broader scale.”
