Being a chartered engineer could be your ultimate goal, and it is undeniable that starting the application will be challenging (unless you are well-informed about it).
In today's sharing, I'm "exposing" ?? my process/strategy of achieving the Chartered/Member with the Royal Institution of Naval Architects .
1st Step: Understand Where You Stand
Disclaimer: All steps can be done concurrently.
This is the best way to start your journey. It took me a few weeks to understand the requirements and eligibility. What did I do?
All of this information can be obtained on the RINA website here: https://rina.org.uk/membership/professional-registration/
This is one of the steps I love the most! Why? It forces me to self-critique myself and allows me to close my skills "gaps". I am still doing it now.
TIPS: At one stage, I needed clarification with some requirements, and a simple email to RINA has helped me! I think you should do the same (if you have put effort into finding the information you need). They are very supportive and helpful. Thanks for being supportive Royal Institution of Naval Architects !
2nd Step: Keep Your Work Diary
Disclaimer: All steps can be done concurrently.
I was lucky to start my career at Ships Classification Malaysia , where we had to keep all the necessary work reports and details to achieve our Plan Approval Engineer CoC. I religiously keep this report up to date every day, and I am blessed that it has helped me get the CoC and my Chartered!
I have used this as my starting point and progressively developed my Chartered/Professional report.
If you have not done it, now is the time to start! Try to recall as much as possible what you have done.
This is the information/record that I retain:

TIPS: Try to digitalise it! I started with the A4 report in handwritten format, which took me 6 months to digitalise. So, please put them in the cloud now! ?
3rd Step: Find a mentor & industry buddy
Disclaimer: All steps can be done concurrently.
This is the stage I recommend most! Whether you are working towards achieving CEng or not, this will help you move and progress your career. Having someone with more experience will help accelerate our learning curve. My mentor is not someone with CEng/PEng, but they are engineers in the industry with valuable knowledge and years of experience. Try to meet with them once every 4-5 months and learn something new from them. Importantly, share your goals with them. A good mentor/buddy will guide you to become a good engineer - because you will try to "mimic" their achievements. ??
Back to my CEng strategy, get someone in your office with similar interests. Plan the roadmap together with them. For instance, in my team at Floating Solutions Consulting , 2-3 of us were working towards CEng. Once in a while, we shared our progress and pushed each other towards it! Plus, I have amazing leaders with CEng willing to help us in detail if we are stuck with it.
If you are stuck on this, I am happy to be your buddy! I am still learning, but let's learn together! Those in Malaysia, let's grab some coffee (my treat ??). Those outside Malaysia, we can have virtual coffee! hehehe.
TIPS: You could also get a mentor/buddy from another industry. The idea of having a mentor/buddy is to ensure you are on the right path.
4th Step: Submit it!
Once you have ticked all the requirements, submit it! The journey of preparing CEng documentation is amazing - it gives you a self-reflection on what you have done and what goes well or oppositely.
Don't rush it; take it step by step. It took me two years to prepare for it, and I never regret it. Keep motivated, everyone!
End.
All the best!
