Natures Masterclass

Natures Masterclass

Nature never stops to amaze me.

Since my childhood my visits to the Hoodi beach at Kemmanu and Juhu beach in Mumbai I have been amazed at the ways in which Nature operates. I have been in awe and have tried to take inspiration and kept looking for insights that continue to amaze me till date.

Recently going through the places we need to visit, I was reading about the Redwood Forest and as usual was awestruck once again. It here that we could find trees that grow as tall as 350 feet high, the bark of these trees does not catch fire easily and these trees could live up to 2000 years and more. These trees are home to many species who love to live at high altitudes to be safe from predators and many more facts that kept me reading with glee.

The question that came to my mind was for such beautiful trees the roots of these trees must be strong, as they can withstand strong winds and hence live for centuries. To take care of such heights (350feet) the foundation (roots) needs to go deep as well. ?One might think that such a lofty being would require deep roots, but no. The roots only extend down six to twelve feet. But what they lack in-depth, they make up for in breadth. Extending up to 100 feet from the tree’s base, they intertwine with the roots of others, all holding on to each other, greatly increasing their stability.????????????????????????????

The roots of these trees took strength and gave support to their neighbouring trees. The roots of the tree would interwind with the roots of the neighbouring trees and thus gave strength to each other. It was natures replica of a support system which we all look forward to. Reminded me of the large joint family that I was a part of in Moodbidri.?

Our brains are designed for dependency, through connections. We need to be aware that we need to connect to thrive. Yet do we? ????????????????????????????????????? The roots when they meet the root next door, do they assess their status, NO! they just embrace each other simply because they are aware and know to survive and thrive for years and centuries, they must embrace all around them. Is there a learning here for organisations to thrive for decades and more. There are many such organisation around the globe and if there is a common thread in these companies, I think it is the bonds they create within the organisation. I consider myself blessed to have worked in such companies (P &G, L’Oréal, Gillette) I am sure the other company I worked with Airtel will also cross 100 years, but I will not be around to see that.

The trust these roots demonstrate, for me the learning is I need to trust all, as that lends me stability, confidence, and sustainability. If I am stable and believe in sustainability, I will feel confident to grow and share with the world what I stand for.

Would love to hear from you how Nature amazes you and your insights.

Your insights into Nature's interconnectedness really struck a chord with me! It's amazing how something as simple as trees relying on each other for stability can teach us such valuable lessons about teamwork and trust, both in nature and in our workplaces. Just picture those Redwood trees, standing tall and strong because they're all in it together. And you're spot on about leadership! I've seen firsthand how great leaders can build a culture of trust and empowerment, just like how those trees support each other in the forest. When leaders encourage collaboration and make everyone feel valued, it's like creating a fertile ground where teams can grow and succeed. It's amazing how much we can learn from Mother Nature, isn't it? Thanks for sharing your thoughts and giving us all something meaningful to ponder!"
