No justice in sight for World Bank project-affected communities in Liberia. More than a year late, the World Bank’s International Finance Corporation has finally submitted its response to an investigation that found evidence of grave human rights violations at the Salala Rubber Corporation (SRC) that it helps fund in Liberia. ?The IFC, established to fund private sector development in poor countries, loaned $10 million to SRC to rehabilitate and expand its plantations in 2007. Affected communities filed a complaint ?with the finance institution’s independent grievance body, the Compliance Advisor Ombudsman, alleging failure to prevent abuses by SRC. [Read more]
Country diary: A bird that had existed only in my imagination becomes vividly real. We’ve come to church this morning in search of a fictional bird. On the south side of the graveyard, sunlight paves the lime walk, but offers little warmth for those who choose to linger. It’s not the first time I’ve haunted this churchyard in winter, praying for hawfinches in the yew trees, but so far my only sighting of the UK’s largest finch has been in my Collins Guide to British Birds. The parish church of St Andrew is blessed with grounds full of mature trees and the old spreading yew by the gate has attracted a small flock of birders. We join them, stamping numb feet, hoping for a miracle in its evergreen interior. [Read more]
Study of more than 600 animal and plant species finds genetic diversity has declined globally. Genetic diversity in animals and plants has declined globally over the past three decades, an analysis of more than 600 species has found. The research, published in the journal Nature, found declines in two-thirds of the populations studied, but noted that urgent conservation efforts could halt or even reverse genetic diversity losses. Dozens of scientists internationally reviewed 882 studies that measured genetic diversity changes between 1985 and 2019 in 628 species of animals, plants, fungi and chromists (a type of organism), forming what they have called “the most comprehensive investigation” of changes in genetic diversity within species to date.
