When primary research is submitted to Nature or one of the Nature research journals (e.g. Nature Chemistry, Nature Sustainability) and accepted for publication, authors from over 70 countries classified by the World Bank as low-income (LIC) or lower-middle-income economies (LMICs) can now publish their work Gold open access at no cost. This initiative acknowledges that local financing is rarely available for publishing OA in specialty journals such as Nature, whose characteristics such as in-house editorial teams and low acceptance rates make it challenging for authors from these less well-funded nations.
The fact that authors will not have to request assistance is a crucial component of this initiative. The APC will be covered by Springer Nature. Corresponding authors from qualifying countries whose primary research papers are accepted in principle (AIP) for publication in these titles will be notified as part of the publication process that their paper will be published gold OA, with?Springer Nature?covering the APC. If authors do not desire for their papers to be made open access, they can opt out.
Open Access encourages open science and collaboration by making research accessible to the largest audience possible. With this move, SpringerNature is advancing the cause of more equal research publishing and increased worldwide access to scientific knowledge.
