NATO has to be proactive - not reactive
After the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine many observers pointed out that the world order dramatically changed and Russia now represents a significant threat to Europe and the world.
NATO military response so far has been mostly reactive:
1. Bringing more NATO troops to Eastern European countries.
2. Adding and replacing outdated anti-aircraft batteries with Patriot missile systems.
3. Providing Ukraine with significant amount of portable anti-tank and anti-aircraft systems.
4. Providing Ukraine parts to repair damaged fighter jet fleet and, potentially, new fighter jets (still in limbo for fears of escalation).
5. Providing Ukraine with more units of heavy artillery, armoured vehicles, tanks, small arms, and ammunition to the above.
6. Providing Ukraine with some anti-ship missile systems.
Remaining problems affecting not only Ukraine but all European countries:
1. How to counter long-range missile strikes coming from Russia, Belarus, Black Sea fleet and strategic bombers (i.e. hit back at the origin of these strikes or prevent them from happening).
2. How to counter Black Sea blockade by Russian warships (i.e. patrol Black Sea with NATO/US fleet).
3. How to not only defend Ukrainian territory but take back occupied land (i.e. provide more offensive weapons, such as fighter jets, drones etc.).
These problems have to be solved proactively - not after the fact (i.e. Russian missiles hit Finland or Moldova - or similar escalation).
