Emerging brands and their unique needs

Hi, Joanna Fantozzi here, Senior Editor for Nation’s Restaurant News. ?This week, while I was attending one of our CREATE Roadshow events that are being held in the leadup to the CREATE Experience this fall in Palm Springs, Calif., I began to think about just how unique the individual needs of emerging brands are.

During the event, held at Industry East Side in Austin, Texas, our three panelists from Hopdoddy Burger Bar, Via 313 Pizzeria, and Chi’lantro BBQ discussed and debated some of the tough decisions that emerging restaurant concepts have to make as they grow, from figuring out where to open your next store to how to attract the attention of investors and private equity firms.??

The key takeaway for me was how different the needs of emerging restaurant brands are, both from each other and from some of the mid-sized and larger brands out there. Since I always think about operations through a technology lens, a good example is deciding whether to launch an app. We all know that online ordering capabilities are crucial to the success of nearly every restaurant out there, but do you really need a separate app or are third-party delivery partnerships enough? For one of our panelists, having a loyalty app was the perfect way to engage with customers, while another panelist frankly felt that the cost of investment was prohibitive.?

As always, it’s all about knowing the needs of your consumer, no matter if you’re one store or 1,000.??

Now let’s check out some headlines from the week.
