National Volunteer Month Spotlight: Sumaira Ahmed
April is National Volunteer Month, and Tokio Marine Highland is proud to celebrate and highlight the volunteer work that our team is doing in their communities. This week, we're spotlighting Sumaira Ahmed , Enterprise Risk and Compliance Analyst.
What is an example of your volunteer work, and why did you choose to get involved?
I have been volunteering for different charities for a number of years - however, I ended up volunteering for the BSA by accident as we signed my son up to become a boy scout and they needed help at the monthly meetings.
What do you find most interesting or rewarding from your experience?
I have been learning about different religions and cultures as we have taken the kids to multi-faith places of worship, as well as visiting community helpers such as the local fire station and police station - it's great to thank the community workers for the service they provide. We also take the scout troop to the Houston food bank regularly where the kids work in an assembly line to pack boxes to help those in need, which makes them more thankful for the opportunities they have.
What is your favorite part about volunteering in your community?
Volunteering with my child is a great reward; I am able to see first-hand the amazing characteristics he is developing - empathy, thoughtfulness, and being more patient and tolerant of others. By volunteering with him and giving back to the community, I am able to show him firsthand how volunteering makes a difference and how good it feels to help others.
