National Volunteer Month
Did you know that in the United States April is National Volunteer Month? I’m so glad that my former colleague Jessica Bargilione reminded me that this month is dedicated to recognizing the importance of volunteering and honoring the significant contributions volunteers make by generously donating their time and talents to worthy causes.
Here’s what I’ve been up to in April of 2021:
- April 6th - donated one pint of blood to the American Red Cross – which marked my 42nd blood donation since relocating to North Carolina in 2013!
- I am currently fundraising for St. Baldrick's, a not-for-profit organization that raises funds to help find cures for children with cancer. I am scheduled to chop off at least 8" of hair this Saturday, April 24th for a wig donation.
- I am actively volunteering my time reviewing the Institue of Packaging Professionals (IoPP) Packaging Engineering Scholarship Fund (PESF) applications - Round 1 was completed last week and our final selections for Round 2 are due back to IoPP by Monday morning, April 26th!
- IoPP created the PESF to support packaging education and raise awareness of packaging as a career choice. In addition to helping students pay for their educations, IoPP shares the talent identified through the program with its benefactor companies to use as a recruiting tool for their organizations.
- Earlier this month I registered a team of 4 for the Wilson County Humane Society (WCHS) annual Puppy Bowl bowling fundraiser which will take place on May 20th.
- WCHS is an unsheltered humane society with no permanent office. Our organization is purely foster-home based. Our members are concerned about the care and well-being of animals in Wilson County, NC!
- Thankfully, at this time no foster cats require a place to crash, but earlier this year, Georgia, Arie, and Miss Muffet each had a pit stop into our home as part of their journey from the local animal control shelter to safe no-kill rescue groups. I am counting this as 8 lives saved year-to-date since Miss Muffet was pregnant with a litter of 5 kittens!
It’s amazing that all of these activities have converged into volunteer month. Please let me know what you are doing in honor of #nationalvolunteermonth!
