National Train Enquiry System and its Services
In this fast-growing world, we need to travel from one place to another. But how do they do it? To remove this geographical barrier we travel using railways. Now, we need to know the timing and location of these trains don't we? So here's this service called National Train Enquiry System or NTES provided to us by the Indian railways.
When any train passes by any station, the on-duty stationmaster informs about the same to the control office. The head of the control office then feeds the exact information with exact timing online. This then goes on and keeps changing with each passing station.
How does it work?
NTES is a system that provides real-time information about all the trains, their status, their timing, their route and everything. Our whole Indian railway is divided into four divisional offices and the head of these offices is called DRM. The four divisional offices are situated in the respective cities- Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata.
DRM is the control office, which controls the movement of all the trains. As soon as any train passes by any station, duty station the head gives this information to the control office and then the head of the control office updates this information online. With the given time and updates, the computer processes the data and calculates the timing of the trains, if they delay, postpone or prepone. This is how the National Train Enquiry System works.
How is it maintained?
NTES is maintained by a technical organization, which comes under the ministry of railways and is called CRIS (Centre for Railway Information system). CRIS was established in 1986 by India's Ministry of Railways. It is situated in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi. The Centre for Railway Information system designs, implements, formulates and maintains all the information system of Railways. It has around 800 employees in current and serves its services all over India.
The location, status, arrival and departure of all the trains are analysed and recorded in the four main sites of NTES i.e., Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai. After the information is fed in the main sites it is then replicated to all the other local sites using a replication server. In this way, all the data of a train including train status, location, timing is available on all the other sites or applications.
