Mexican carriers and drivers, faced with the growing insecurity on the Mexican roads, have decided to take drastic measures by calling for a national strike on February 5, 2024.
Through a statement circulating on social media, this mobilization aims to express, in a public, peaceful, and lawful manner, dissatisfaction with various unresolved issues. The main demand is for a solution to the insecurity that jeopardizes the integrity of the drivers. They emphasize that apologies are extended to the public for possible disruptions on federal roads due to this action.
In an interview with the media, the national president of the Conductores Federales Unidos (Mexican United Federal Drivers, UFD) announced that, in addition to the strike, peaceful marches will take place on all the country's roads. He explained that they seek to bring attention to an issue that has been affecting them for years, but is now reaching critical levels.
UFD denounced corruption by public security personnel directed towards transport drivers and noted that, despite participating in meetings and dialogues with the Guardia Nacional (National Guard), they have only received evasive responses. One reason could be that the National Guard may be concerned with the lack of budget for surveillance.
As an example of the precarious situation, it was indicated that around 3,549 patrols are assigned to monitor more than 40,000 federal road sections.
Carriers and drivers demand priority attention to the most insecure roads. In the last year, approximately 20 drivers have disappeared. Armed groups detain drivers while cargo or trucks are robbed; subsequently, they are released on the roads. In other cases, drivers are reported as missing due to a lack of information about their whereabouts. This strike action will hopefully bring to light the issues regarding drivers safety, and spur authorities into taking precautionary measures.
