National Stakeholder Dialogue on Sustainable Groundwater Management in Zimbabwe: A Collaborative Effort

In an era where water scarcity continues to escalate, sustainable management of groundwater resources has become imperative. Recognizing this urgent need, the SADC-Groundwater Management Institute (SADC-GMI) and the Zimbabwean Government through Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development are joining forces to host a pivotal National Stakeholder Dialogue. Scheduled for January 22-23, 2025, at the Golden Conifer in Harare, this dialogue aims to foster collaboration among essential stakeholders in the sector. Under the theme Sustainable Groundwater Management through Stakeholder Engagement, the event will serve as a platform to address the myriad challenges facing Zimbabwe's groundwater systems and develop actionable solutions through expert insights and stakeholder collaboration.
Purpose of the Dialogue?
The primary objective of this National Stakeholder Dialogue is threefold:?
1. Identify Groundwater Challenges?
Participants will engage in discussions related to groundwater issues that impact the sustainability and availability of water resources in Zimbabwe. These conversations will prioritize identifying the most pressing challenges faced by different demographics across the country.?
2. Raise awareness on groundwater legislation and institutional arrangements in Zimbabwe
Groundwater is a critical resource for Zimbabwe, essential for economic activities and the livelihoods of its citizens. To ensure its sustainability, there is a pressing need for effective legislation and institutional frameworks. Stakeholders from both the public and private sectors must collaborate to improve current groundwater management laws and practices. This initiative aims to foster cooperation between these sectors to enhance legislative efforts that support sustainable groundwater management across Zimbabwe, thereby securing this vital resource for future generations.
3. Conscientize Stakeholders on SADC-GMI’s Role
