The Ministry of Finance and Planning (MoFP) in collaboration with the Civil Society organizations under Tanzania Sustainable Development Platform and other stakeholders, have done a policy review of the National Population Policy (NPP) 2006 as well as preparing its Implementation Strategy (IS).?
The aim of the review was to assess progress made in implementing the National Population Policy (NPP) 2006 and provide a way forward on the country’s development path in the years ahead. It also aimed at ensuring that policy objectives of the revised National Population Policy? are in tune with the current views and aspirations of the nation and reflects the country’s emerging population issues.?
For instance, the changes in the paradigm of development blueprint in the early 2000’s such as Tanzania Development Vision (TDV) 2025, the Long-Term Perspective Plan, 2011/12 – 2025/26 implementable through The First National Five-Year Development Plan (2011/12 - 2015/16), the Second National Five-Year Development Plan (2016/17 - 2020/21) and currently the Third National Five-Year Development Plan (2021/22 – 2025/26).

Moreover, in the international platforms, several issues have emerged such as the effects of the population on employment, the Inclusion of special groups in social, political, and economic activities, Improving provision of Reproductive Health, and Ineffective environmental conservation for sustainable development, delaying social Capital and? Effects of non-communicable diseases which made stakeholders recommend that the Government should also pay attention to Tropical Neglected diseases, and Outbreaks like COVID 19 and pandemics of such which have shown severe damages to country’s economy and even manpower and has also? watershed developmental progress that had been attained earlier, thus the Government through policymakers should pay a keen eye in making policies that combat the impacts from pandemics such as COVID 19 apart from that the government should set aside a recovery budget? that will be used to assist the retrieval process and avoid further damage instead of pre-empting the initial set budget for development plans.
Therefore, the review took into consideration the dynamic issues of economic, social, cultural, political, and environmental with significant influence on demographics and socioeconomic development aspirations of the country towards the attainment of the Vision 2025 and beyond targets, and with the endorsement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030 and Africa Agenda 2063. All these changes call for revision of the population policy to lodge a new development focus that has occurred for the betterment of the country.?
