National Payroll Week - a moment to reflect....

“I wish I spent more time entering timesheet data into payroll” said no one, ever.

“I love chasing people up for late timesheets” said no one, ever.

“I live for ever-changing payroll legislation changes” said no one, ever.

“Of course dealing with payroll queries is my calling in life” said no one ever.

“You’re right, it’s completely my fault you forgot to record your overtime” said no one, ever.

Spare a thought for those poor payroll professionals and the daily struggle they endure at the mercy of the rest of us. Getting payroll right is stressful, complicated and important.

It’s important because it accounts for around 60% of most company expenditure and affects EVERYBODY.

I don’t believe anyone wakes up each payday morning and thinks “I can’t wait to kick up a storm with Jane in payroll because I deliberately tried to catch her out by not completing my timesheet properly”.?Mistakes happen and are rarely the fault of one individual but rather a culmination of errors.

According to Perkbox those working in HR and employee-facing roles are the second most subjected to stress (behind sales) and according to the CIPD, workload is the highest cause of stress in the workplace.

So how can we help our brothers and sisters in arms who furnish us with our hard-earned riches every month? One way might be to provide them with the right tools? Using the right tools gives back time. With more time the workload remains the same but it easier to manage because it is handled in a much better way.

I know that if I can complete my timesheet online in our integrated payroll software then no one needs to enter it in again somewhere else. If no one needs to do that, then the business has more time to check it and I’m more likely to get paid correctly. Factor in automated calculations on overtime, sickness, holiday pay and automatic legislation updates and I’m even less likely to be marching down the office to have it out with the payroll department and ruin everyone’s weekend!
