National One Cent Day

?How much is one cent worth to you?

Little history on National One Cent Day

The coin underwent several alterations from mid-1793 to present. Flowing Hair Chain which consisted of 15 interlocked links, due to its design, it faced severe criticism was replaced by a wreath. Thus, named as Flowing Hair Wreath.

Later in 1793, it was changed due to the dissatisfaction among the people over the previous designs to become The Liberty Cap Large Cent.???

In 1796, Congress came into the Power, and a new design was put to order. However, the design remained the same with the reverse design having three sets of design. The copper coin features a wreath and silver coin was depicted with a bald eagle. Commonly known as Draped Bust, and was minted at a high price.??In 1798, Heraldic Eagle replaced the small eagle and took a new name as Draped Bust, Heraldic Eagle. While these coins were handmade, variations and errors had appeared, but still they circulated till 1807.

In 1808, the Liberty Head was made with long, curly hairs and surrounded by stars around the outer coin. Later the head was redesigned and it featured curly hair with ribbon. The design was in circulation right from 1808 to 1816 and the coin is known as Classic Head.

During the year 1814, Classic Head became Coronet Large Cent, alternating the number of stars. It went through a series of changes during the years between 1816 to 1839 until the production was stopped.

In 1839, the Matron Head was designed and the liberty was made to appear slimmer, younger, and named as Braided hair.??Minor changes continued till the end of mintage and the same design lasted for almost two decades.

In 1857, new Cents were released. Due to its enormous demand, people were furious about exchanging the pennies.?Hard copper-nickel alloy leads to increased breakage and therefore objections for the coin arouse. To overcome the objections, a new version of the Cent was released in 1858.

During 1859, the Indian Head Cent was designed with the goddess of Liberty with Headdress and the reverse design consisted of a wreath and a shield. In 1908, it was proposed to design a Lincoln Cent.??The end of the series began and circulation stopped during the year of 1909.

From 1909 to present day, Lincoln Coin has been used. The design features Lincoln and the reverse side appears with the value of the coin along with a Union Shield.?This coin was known as Lincoln Wheat Cent and was in circulation from 1909-1958.?Later 1959-2008 it was changed to Lincoln Memorial Cent as it has the Lincoln Memorial on the reverse.
