The National Living Wage (NLW), paid to workers aged 23 and over and the National Minimum Wage (NMW) (for those of at least school leaving age) will be increasing from 1 April 2021.
Age Rates from April 2021
23 and over (NLW) - ￡8.91
21 to 22 - ￡8.36
18 to 20 - ￡6.56
Under 18 - ￡4.62
Apprentice* - ￡4.30
*The rate for apprentices applies if you are under 19 or in first year of apprenticeship, however, the apprenticeship rate does not apply to Higher Level Apprenticeships.
No worker can be paid less than National Minimum Wage or National Living Wage (some agricultural workers must be paid more because there is a higher Agricultural Minimum Wage rate).
Most workers in the UK over compulsory school leaving age are legally entitled to be paid at least the National Minimum Wage and all employers have to pay it to you if you are entitled to it. Things such as if you are paid weekly or monthly, by cheque, in cash or in another way, if you work full time, part time or any other working pattern, if you work at your employer’s own premises or elsewhere or what size your employer is makes no difference – you must be paid at least National Minimum Wage.
