National Hire a Veteran Day- Chilton, WI

??From Military Precision to Safety Excellence ?????

Chris — US Navy Veteran Master at Arms, EH&S Specialist, Worthington Industries / Bernzomatic Facility?

In the military, everything was black and white, and adhering to regulations was non-negotiable. This discipline made it easier for me to understand the importance of safety and the need to adhere to regulations in the civilian realm. Although I had never worked in a safety role before, the structure and mindset of the military translated well into this new domain.

When I joined Worthington Industries Bernzomatic facility as an inspector in the lumber industry, I was upfront about my lack of experience in safety. However, the company welcomed me with open arms and offered support every step of the way. Six years after my US Navy service, I became an employee at Chilton, and the camaraderie with other veterans was immediate. Having shared experiences and stories with them made me feel like a valuable part of the team right from the start.

Transitioning to the safety realm posed its challenges. The way things are done in this field is different from what I was accustomed to. However, I quickly learned that success lies in utilizing available resources and never hesitating to ask questions. The safety professionals around me became mentors and guides, helping me navigate this new territory effectively.

My advice for anyone transitioning from the military structure to civilian careers is simple: use your resources and don't be afraid to ask questions. To be successful in your career is a collaborative effort, and the expertise of those around you can be invaluable. Take advantage of training programs, seek guidance from experienced colleagues, and stay up-to-date with the latest regulations and best practices. By embracing this mindset and continuously learning, you can thrive in the safety realm and make a positive impact on your organization's well-being.

At Chilton, we recognize the unique value that prior military veterans bring to our team. Their dedication, discipline, and attention to detail make them exceptional safety professionals. We encourage other companies to consider hiring veterans and provide them with the support and opportunities they deserve.
