National Health Mission Extended for Five More Years: A Milestone for Healthcare in India

The Union Cabinet has approved the continuation of the National Health Mission (NHM) for another five years, marking a significant milestone in India's healthcare journey. Since its inception, the NHM has been crucial in improving public health infrastructure and providing accessible healthcare to millions nationwide.

Historic Achievements Under the NHM

Union Minister highlighted the mission's achievements, particularly over the last decade:

• 12 lakh healthcare workers were added to the NHM workforce between 2021 and 2022.
• The Mission played a vital role in India’s fight against COVID-19, enabling a coordinated response and strengthening the healthcare system.
• Over the years, the NHM has improved maternal and child health, immunization rates, and access to primary healthcare, especially in rural and underserved areas.

Why Is the NHM Extension Important?

1. Strengthened Healthcare Infrastructure: NHM has been instrumental in building and maintaining primary health centers (PHCs), community health centers (CHCs), and district hospitals across India.
2. Focus on Preventive and Curative Care: The Mission addresses critical health challenges, including maternal and child health, non-communicable diseases, and infectious diseases like tuberculosis and malaria.
3. Capacity Building: By adding millions of healthcare workers, including nurses, doctors, and allied health professionals, NHM ensures that the healthcare workforce is equipped to meet the needs of the population.
