The National Day of Mourning is many things

It’s a day of remembrance to honour those who didn’t make it home from work and those whose lives will never be the same due to injury.

It’s a day of reflection on the impact to the families.

It’s a day that reminds us that we need to do better.

For me, it’s a day that provides an opportunity to reinforce our commitment to improving health and safety in the workplace.

A day to encourage us to take a proactive approach and adjust our work practices to ensure a future without workplace deaths, injuries or illnesses.

I think a big part of this commitment is creating a safety culture within our workplaces.

One where employees feel comfortable to speak up, and swift action is taken when concerns are raised. One where employees receive more than adequate training and employees are recognized for their contributions to maintaining a safe workplace. And one where a proactive approach is taken, instead of focusing on safety when tragedy strikes.

So as you leave work today, consider how you will create a culture of safety at your workplace.
