National Coding Week: Meet the iProov Coders!

?? It’s National Coding Week, and this year’s theme is AI!

? At iProov artificial intelligence and machine learning are at the core of what we do, so to celebrate this year's National Coding Week we've decided to spotlight our iProov coders and ask them to share what skills are needed to be a coder, and work in AI.

Check out their words of wisdom below!?

What piece(s) of advice would you give to someone looking to get into coding?

Connor:?Choose something to build. Figure out what skills you need to make it, and then take the time to learn. Remember that not everyone learns in the same - there are plenty of resources out there from video courses to articles.

Finally, ask the programmers! They will happily teach you bits about their field if you ask!

Karina:?Figure out your motivation, and what it is you want to learn - are you looking for a career change, or are you looking to create a video game? Once you know your motivation, search for free resources around it and get started!

Seyi:?Practice! It’s the best way to learn coding, try learning a little bit every day - even if it's only a few minutes! Apply your coding skills to solving real-world problems. Start building a project, learn the skills needed, and get to work.

Richard:?Understand the difference between a Software Engineer and a Developer/Coder, and then become the former.?

Anyone can learn to code, like anyone can learn to lay bricks, the real skill is in knowing how to design and build using solid architectural principles so your building/program is stable, reliable, and easy to fix and extend.?

Violet:?Projects you are working on won't always work the first time, so there is a need for emotional resilience, and choosing something meaningful to practice on. If you have emotional resilience and a meaningful project you'll be more motivated to keep going.

What skills are needed to excel at working in machine learning??

Connor:?Problem-solving and recognizing patterns are important skills when it comes to working in AI. You also need a good balance between creative and technical thinking.??

Seyi:?Having good communication skills is important. You will often have to share your ideas with both technical and non-technical-minded people

Practical skills, such as being proficient in Python and Java or being able to understand and interpret data, will also help you succeed.

Violet:?Being confident in mathematics is crucial when working in machine learning. You'll also need to have even more of that abstract imagination, creativity is required too.
