National Bladder Health Month: Don’t Let Bladder Problems Impact your Quality of Life
November is National Bladder Health Month and Lipella Pharmaceuticals is proud to join with other organizations, including the Urology Care Foundation, to highlight the importance of bladder health and its close connection to our overall health.
The bladder plays an essential role in eliminating toxins and excess fluids from the body. As an individual’s bladder health decreases, their risk of chronic illness increases.
Bladder conditions are extremely common, and despite the significant impact they can have on quality of life, sufferers often avoid discussing these issues with their doctor due to embarrassment. According to the American Urological Association, more than 33 million Americans are living with overactive bladder, and one in two women over the age of 65 years are impacted by stress urinary incontinence. Bladder cancer is the sixth most common cancer in the United States.
Hemorrhagic cystitis (HC) is a serious, life-threatening bladder condition that can occur in the months and years after pelvic radiation therapy or bladder-toxic chemotherapy. Its symptoms can be debilitating and include urinary bleeding, urinary pain and incontinence. HC is a rare condition in the general population, but is believed to affect between 10% and 35% of patients following treatment for pelvic cancers.?
Lipella is proud to be developing what could potentially be the first therapeutic to treat HC which currently has no approved treatment and no cure. The FDA has awarded our drug candidate, LP-10, with Orphan Drug Designation, recognizing it as a product that has the potential to treat HC, a rare disease.
