National Apprentice Week 2024

National Apprentice Week 2024

This week we are celebrating National Apprenticeship Week and the wide range of apprenticeship routes available in construction and across our projects.?

At Multiplex we’re committed to breaking stereotypes, addressing the skills gap in the industry and inspiring the next generation of professionals.??

To highlight some of the benefits apprenticeships can offer, we spoke with two apprentices at our 30 Grosvenor Square project where Multiplex are working alongside our supply chain partners to create apprenticeship opportunities.?

Meet Elliot. He’s currently undertaking an apprenticeship in Quantity Surveying with J A Brooks , who are delivering the shell and core mechanical services package there.?

What experience have you gained from the apprenticeship so far??

In my two years at J A Brooks I’ve gained understanding and knowledge about mechanical and public health services and quantity surveying, and I am still learning something new every day. I’ve had the opportunity to work with different departments, which has helped with my communication with different people, such as clients and site-based operatives.??

?

What interests you about the construction industry as a potential career choice??

I’ve always wanted to get into construction, as I find the process of a building being built from the ground up fascinating. I was never sure what type of trade would suit me best, but I’ve always had an interest in maths and numbers and with the help from J A Brooks , I have found my passion as a quantity surveyor. There’s nothing else I’d rather be doing!?

?

What are the benefits of a foundation apprenticeship??

The key benefit of a foundation apprenticeship is the on-job experience. In my opinion, a book can only teach you so much, but when you combine book learning with the on-job experience it gives you a much better understanding of the profession. The foundation apprenticeship has also given me the opportunity to network within the industry, which is invaluable.??

What has been the most challenging part of the apprenticeship work placement??

The most challenging part of the apprenticeship work placement was adapting to new surroundings. Before I came to J A Brooks , I had just finished my GCSEs and left school. When I arrived to site, at 30 Grosvenor, everyone was very supportive and welcoming, which meant a lot.??

What would it be your advice for someone who is looking for an apprenticeship??

The best advice I would offer to someone is to find an apprenticeship that suits you, stay patient, be willing to learn and enjoy the process.?

We also sat down with Taylor who is undertaking an Electrical Apprenticeship with Phoenix ME , who are delivering the Mechanical, Electrical and Public Health services fit-out package for us at 30 Grosvenor Square.

?What experience have you gained from the apprenticeship so far??

I've already?gained?so much from this apprenticeship with Phoenix ME . From a stable job and income to also giving me life opportunities, such?as setting up a pension, it’s been brilliant. I get to do so much on site, from learning and gaining relevant knowledge which has really helped me at college. Having nice friendly faces on site who have been in my position before and are happy to help teach you as well as praise good work has also been great.?

What interests you about the construction industry as a potential career choice??

It’s a competitive?industry to get into. I also feel that by working in construction you gain so much?more than just?a job, in terms of the life experience?it offers. The potential for career progression is immense, and I just want to see how far I can go.?

What are the benefits of a foundation apprenticeship??

There are so many benefits?to a foundation apprenticeship. Tuition is paid for and you’re in a full-time job - it’s a great way to start a career. Furthermore, there is endless support and check-ins from various people. People care and take the time to track?your?progress, as well as giving praise, so you feel valued and appreciated.?

What has been the most challenging part of the apprenticeship work placement??

Personally, the hardest part is the commute. The work with Phoenix ME is mostly in London, which for me is about two hours of travel. Day to day challenges include understanding what's?going on onsite and your role, and trying to make sure you’re being of use, but these offer opportunities to grow. When you’re new it can be hard to get stuck in because there is so much to learn. I would also say college is challenging because I don't?enjoy classroom learning and struggle with tests.?

What would be your advice for someone who is looking for an apprenticeship??

My advice would be to make sure you are?comfortable with what you are doing, make sure it's right for you, make sure you want to commit and that you don't?mind early mornings!??
