Nashville Old Timers Baseball Association to Welcome Stars Advisor Don Mattingly
Nashville Stars Baseball Club
Deeply rooted in Tennessee’s rich baseball history, we are committed to bringing Major League Baseball to Music City.
Nashville Stars Baseball Advisor Don Mattingly, currently the Bench Coach of the Toronto Blue Jays , will be the featured speaker for the Nashville Old Timers Baseball Association’s annual banquet on January 19, 2025 at the Music City Sheraton.
Mattingly's appearance is the latest in a long line of baseball figures taking?the stage at this showcase event in recent years. Buck O’Neil kicked off the millennium with his appearance in 2000, with Tim Corbin (2003), R.A. Dickey (2007), Doc Gooden (2011), Rollie Fingers (2016) and Gaylord Perry (2018) among the banquet’s annual speakers in the last quarter-century. Some of our “Middle Tennessee to MLB” subjects have also been honored, including Jim Cosman (2001) and Sonny Gray (2019).
Even before?joining?the Nashville Stars Baseball Club as an advisor in January 2023, Mattingly was?quite familiar with the city and its baseball history. While starting at first base with the Double-A Nashville Sounds Baseball Club — then an affiliate of the New York Yankees — in 1981, Mattingly was named the Yankees’ Minor League Player of the Year as he helped lead the Sounds to a first-place finish in the Southern League’s West Division. That season, Mattingly hit .316 with seven home runs, and he led the team in hits (173), doubles (35) and runs batted in (98) in his lone season with the Sounds. He was promoted?to Triple-A — and ultimately to the majors — in 1982.
Mattingly played his entire 14-year career (1982-1995) with the Yankees, won the American League MVP in 1985 with 94% of the vote, and finished with a career .314 batting average. Demonstrating his prowess at the plate and in the field, he won nine Gold Gloves (1985-1989, 1991-1994) and three straight Silver Slugger Awards while earning six consecutive All-Star selections between 1984 and 1989. After retiring as a player, he managed the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2011 to 2015 and the Miami Marlins from 2016 to 2022 before assuming his current role in Toronto.
