Is Narrative Enhanced Leadership What You Have Been Looking For?
Ervin (Earl) Cobb
Leadership and Business Management Consultant, Speaker and Bestselling Author
For many years, researchers around the world have discovered the prevailing effect of a good story. A good story or well-written narrative can have a powerful effect on the human brain, and not just in terms of entertainment. It is no surprise that respected educational organizations are beginning to deliberately integrate storytelling into their programs and courses. Among them are Narrative 4, StoryCorps, The Kitchen Sisters and the Humans of New York.
WHAT IS IT?
Narrative Enhanced Leadership Development? or NEL is a learning and knowledge retention technique specifically developed for Managers and Supervisors seeking to expand their leadership skills and career opportunities. NEL is designed to activate the brain of readers to turn situational narratives into their own experiences.
WHY DOES IT WORK?
A well-written narrative can help us to learn and retain important information, both in casual and formal learning settings. According to Gerry Beamish, a UK consultant who researches the value of storytelling in accelerating learning, “A story is the only way to activate parts in the brain so that a listener turns the narrative into their own ideas and experience.”
According to Paul Zak, Director of the Center for Neuroeconomics Studies at Claremont Graduate University, “stories capture our attention better than other information because they leave a physical and emotional trace in the brain.” Zak writes, “As social creatures who regularly affiliate with strangers, stories are an effective way to transmit important information and values from one individual or community to the next. Stories that are personal and emotionally compelling engage more of the brain, and thus are better remembered, than simply stating a set of facts.”
Thus, NEL works because, as humans, we are all wired to allow good stories to place us in someone else’s shoes – one of the best ways to appreciate and understand the hard core realities associated with being a leader.
WHAT IS A SMART LEADER?
The reference here is to the archetype of The SMART Leader as set forth in the new book, “THE SMART LEADER AND THE "SKINNY" PRINCIPLES: How to Lead and Win within Any Organization” by Ervin (Earl) Cobb and Charlotte D. Grant-Cobb, PhD. Earl and Charlotte are the authors of ten published books. Their published work is highly respected for being ultra-contemporary and even life changing.
The break-through book is scheduled to be released in the fall of 2019. The book builds upon a carefully chosen collection of what's called “Skinny” Principles. These Principles candidly "cut to the chase" and simplify what must be done to address the hard-core realities embedded within the challenging art of leading within 21st century organizations. In ten short chapters, the reader is provided the What, Why, How and When associated with mastering the “Skinny” Principles. Each chapter is introduced by an ultra-contemporary and suspenseful situational narrative written to help guide Managers and Supervisors in tackling the leadership challenges they are facing today or will face in the future. The print book includes coaching tools and exercises.
