NAP CONTACT MEETING

'CHALLENGES AND ROADMAPS TO MEET EUROPEAN CLIMATE AND NATURE AGREEMENTS'

Dear member,

The impact of the Energy transition is on the NAP agenda on a regular base. Also prominent topics as water, electricity, nitrogen, etcetera are addressed to share our knowledge and broaden our network.

On June 8th we have a unique opportunity to visit Tata Steel for our Q2 Contact Meeting.

Tata Steel (TSN) is our host for the evening and will present the ambition they have to transition to a clean, green and circular steel industry in order to secure the strategic value of TSN for NL. This complex mission will be presented by Bart van der Meulen (TSN). In order to make this transition, the availability of hydrogen is essential. Not only for Tata Steel. Guido Custers (Gasunie) will share the roadmap Gasunie follows to have, a.o. 5 industrial clusters connected, and the Hydrogen network fully completed by 2030.

Even though everyone has heard, and some have experienced, the effects of the legal problems with nitrogen, it is for many not exactly clear what the legal issues are with nitrogen. NAP has asked Mathilde van Velzen-de Boer to share, interactively, her in depth knowledge on this matter with the NAP participants.

First presentation: What exactly is the legal problem with nitrogen?

That nitrogen gets in the way of many developments will be known to everyone by now. But what exactly is the legal problem with nitrogen? Mathilde van Velzen-de Boer (van Benthem en Keulen) will share this with you in the first presentation of the evening. She will discuss current developments in terms of legislation and case law.

Mathilde van Velzen-de Boer?works as a lawyer in environmental and administrative law at Van Benthem en Keulen. She regularly advises, litigates and publishes on nitrogen and is therefore closely informed of all developments in this field.”

Second Presentation: The transition to a clean, green and circular steel industry at Tata Steel in the Netherlands

Tata Steel in Netherlands (TSN) has the ambition to transition to a clean, green and circular steel industry in order to secure the strategic value of TSN for NL. To realise this ambition TSN is putting forward its most ambitious H2-based decarbonisation plan to reduce 35-40% of CO2 emissions by 2030 (~25% of NL industry target). In the second presentation Bart van der Meulen (TSN) will explain why this transition is incredibly complex, for the site, the technology and the business, in a demanding and continuously changing external world. The transition will stretch beyond everyone’s current role at TSN.

Bart van der Meulen?is General Manager Long Term Asset Strategy at Tata Steel in IJmuiden. Bart’s team is responsible for developing an Asset Strategy for low CO2 steelmaking. Bart joined Tata Steel more than 25 years ago and he has mainly worked in the area of Manufacturing and Engineering in functions like Project Manager, Process and Works engineer and Chief Engineer. He has experience in running large and extensive program’s for the site in IJmuiden (500+ M€).?

Third presentation: How to create a national Hydrogen network?

Guido Custers, Director of Hynetwork Services (Gasunie) gives the third presentation. Hynetwork Services is creating a national hydrogen network in the Netherlands that will link the demand for and supply of CO2-free hydrogen. Five industrial clusters will be connected to each other, to other countries and to hydrogen storage and import locations. This will primarily be done using existing infrastructure. The goal is to have the network fully completed by 2030.

Guido Custers?is a senior Executive and Project Director for Gasunie. He joined Gasunie in 2018 on a project now called ‘WarmtelinQ’. As of 2022 he will be the Senior Executive/Project Director for the Hydrogen Backbone.

As a senior Executive he held a board position at an Energy company in the Netherlands (called DELTA Energy). Before that he was responsible for the European gas and power contract portfolio at BP Gas and Power. He started his career in Energy at Essent Energy trading as manager Transportation within the trading department. Mr. Custers studied Energy Management at the University of Eindhoven and conducted an advanced Management Program at INSEAD.

Do you want to know more about these interesting topics, please join on June 8th in IJmuiden!
