Naming Writes now available in book form

HOT SPRINGS, SD – The award-winning series “Naming Writes” that appeared in the Herald-Star from July 2020 to July 2021 and written by correspondent Marcus Heerdt is now available in book form as Naming Writes: A Series of Stories Written about the Places of Today, Named for the People of Yesterday. The book was released on Tuesday, Nov. 21.

At 72 pages and 12 chapters in length, each chapter features the story of a renowned Fall River resident and a building, landmark, or attraction that was named after them, which includes:

F.O. Butler – Butler Park

Fred Evans – Evans Plunge

Mueller Family – Mueller Center

Leslie Jensen – Jensen Highway

Francis Case – Case Auditorium

Jennings Family – Jennings Avenue

Keith Family – JH Keith Memorial Park

Badger Clark – Badger Clark Road

H.R. Woodward – Woodward Field

Dave Scott and Jim Tays – Dave Scott Track and Tays Center

Michael J. Fitzmaurice – South Dakota State Veterans Home

Helen Magee – Helen Magee Heritage Room

Countless hours went into converting Naming Writes into book format, and the project was a group effort between author Marcus Heerdt, Herald-Star publisher Brett Nachtigall, graphic designer Regina Nachtigall, and Mandy Scherer of Scherer Publishing, LLC.

The book features more content than what appeared in the original newspaper series, such as additional photographs and longer stories.

Copies of the book are $35 and are available at the Herald-Star office in Hot Springs. Stop by the office, call (605) 745-3930, or email [email protected] for more information. Copies are also sold online at https://www.frcheraldstar.com/naming-writes.

A book signing is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 2, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Art House Black Hills in Hot Springs, which is located at 405 N River Street.

This is Heerdt’s third book, following Hiking the Black Hills Country (2021) and Best Easy Day Hikes Black Hills Country (2022), both by FalconGuides. Another hiking guidebook, Hiking South Dakota, as well as another local history book, The Story of Moccasin Springs: Past, Present, and Looking to the Future, are both scheduled to be released in 2024.
