- St John’s head coach, Rick Pitino, goes viral for his comments on NIL and the transfer portal in college basketball ?
- The other week I mentioned the state of Georgia proposing a bill that would make NIL compensation tax-exempt, and since then, states such as Alabama and Illinois have followed suit. It’s interesting as some people are open to this idea and others are not, calling it a “slap in the face to taxpayers.” In this new era of collegiate athletics, schools will try to find any way to get an upper hand in recruiting, and I would expect more states to follow this trend. However, I do believe that these bills will face opposition, and thus, a long legal hurdle to actually get passed. ?
- Many were surprised by the recent Texas bill that would limit scholarships for international student athletes however this was something that shouldn’t come to a surprise as schools (and states) try to legislatively come up with ways to deal with the pending House vs. NCAA settlement. With roster limits being proposed to be cut down to 105 for football, 15 for men’s and women’s basketball, 34 for baseball, 28 for men’s and women’s soccer, 25 for softball, and 18 for volleyball, schools and states are grappling with how to in their eyes, maximize scholarships. While I can’t say I agree with this bill, I would say that one should watch to see if other states follow suit or if they wait to see how this plays out in the state of Texas before making any proposals of their own. ?
