- The bombshell news of the Department of Education’s memo on revenue sharing and Title IX created a lot of rumbling this past week. While many believe that the new administration will rescind this guidance, if that does not happen, it will significantly alter how schools are planning to distribute the nearly $20M?as many schools have publicly stated that they plan to distribute over 75% of the money to the school's football and men’s basketball teams. The conversation on this issue will ramp up as we head towards the spring.
- States such as Oklahoma are hopping on board and preparing for the possibility of Judge Claudia Wilken not ruling on the approval of the House v NCAA settlement this spring by allowing universities to directly pay student-athletes. If approval doesn’t happen, many schools will be left in the predicament of having to decide what to do with student-athletes with whom they’ve made “collective” deals with that are conditioned on the House v. NCAA settlement going through. If the settlement is not approved, the schools may be in a position where they will still honor those deals through direct payments. While these moves seem to be a safeguard, there will be significant problems in college athletics if the House v. NCAA settlement isn’t approved in a timely fashion.?
