Name and Claim Your Value on LinkedIn

Name and Claim Your Value on LinkedIn

If you're just finding this series, The 12 Days of Christmas, perhaps you are wondering why I didn't post my series in the days leading up to Christmas. It's because the 12 days of Christmas start on Christmas day and end on Epiphany Eve. What is Epiphany? Epiphany is a Christian holiday commemorating the visit of the Magi ("wise men from the East") to the baby?Jesus. The word epiphany means manifestation, appearance, or an illuminating discovery.

My 12 little gifts are intended to illuminate some of the little things on LinkedIn that can make a difference in the way you appear online. Thus far, each of my little gifts has required little thought and little time to implement. But I want to leave you with a change for your profile that everyone can perceive. That, my friends, will take both thought and time to do your best work. So, on with the day's lesson and #action.

Day 12 #action: name and claim your value on your LinkedIn headline:

Wouldn’t it be great if people could learn more about you quickly? If they could tell right away if YOU could solve the problem they are trying to solve, or if they need to keep looking?

Your LinkedIn headline can do just that, but it is seldom used well. As a matter of fact, most people allow LinkedIn to auto-fill this section for them, but LinkedIn also provides 220 characters for those bold enough to name and claim their value. If you are among the bold, read on.

The LinkedIn headline appears right under your name on LinkedIn. Think of your headline as your marketing tagline and add some additional text. For example, you could start with your job title (or functional job title) and then add the value your clients or customers receive from your services. For example:

  • Restaurant Executive & Project Representative: Delivering all aspects of hospitality culture from concept to execution
  • Senior Human Resources Consultant: Efficiently building and scaling HR solutions, processes and programs to support the growth of your organization
  • General Manager: Creating vision and financial turnaround by: leading by example, leveraging people skills, and analyzing and solving problems creatively

I’ve provided more guidance and examples in my article Your Most Powerful 220 Characters: If You Haven’t Customized Your LinkedIn Headline, You’re Missing Out. Give this important gift to yourself of naming and claiming your value.

wonder why you should put your function title first; it's about what have to offer, title etc follow if you're interesting. it's like seo: first things first.
