NAM Action Collaborative Update
Darrell G. Kirch, M.D.
President Emeritus, Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC)
Last week, I co-chaired the first meeting of the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) Action Collaborative on Clinician Well-Being and Resilience, alongside chair Victor Dzau, MD, NAM president, and co-chair Tom Nasca, MD, MACP, ACGME CEO. More than 50 representatives from professional associations, health care organizations, government, insurers, academia, nonprofits, and other sectors gathered to share information and determine a framework to advance clinician well-being as a national priority and generate evidence-based solutions. U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy delivered remarks at the meeting, highlighting the importance of clinician well-being to the overall health of the nation and emphasizing how administrative burdens are getting in the way of the healing relationships between patients and clinicians. Participants discussed raising awareness of the problem, addressing system-wide issues, destigmatizing clinician self-care, gathering evidence regarding effective preventive interventions, and facilitating implementation of solutions.
