What is the craziest piece of advice that you have ever heard in your professional career? As a speaker, one thing I cannot stand hearing is this creepy tip that has been passed down, reportedly to help overcome stage fright.
Let's face it. If you are in the professional world in any sense, making presentations and talking to multiple people at once could be the norm. But let me ask you this. When is the last time that picturing your audience naked actually helped you give a killer keynote or training? I'm serious!
Many times, we have heard that picturing the listeners unclothed can benefit you and your focus. Let me share a naked truth with you right now - that is FAR from factual, and it's really kind of creepy! What's even crazier is that if you tell your audience you are picturing them naked, that can bring about an array of HR problems that you just do NOT want. Stop saying that AND stop doing that.
No really - it's weird and it's embarrassing. Stop!
So how? How do we fix the problem of stage fright? How do we manage the various fears that try to haunt us while giving a presentation? We know our material, we know we can deliver successfully, we are the expert in our field; yet, something happens to us when we stand up and get in front of the crowd. Well, let me help you! Here are a few safe and morally proper tips that can immediately help you overcome stage fright.
1. Forget about yourself and put that energy into the audience. Yes, you can use that attention and excitement in a different direction. Recognize that the creation of nervousness within you is due to you placing the spotlight ON you! Shift the spotlight to them, shift your focus from you, and watch what happens.
2. Remember what you're really doing. When you are giving a speech or presentation of any kind, remember that you are serving and not just giving another speech. In fact, don't look at it as speaking. Recognize the position you have to give them something they need right in that moment. Your audience is depending on you to serve, not talk at.
3. Let repetition be your friend. Get in the habit of practicing your speech or presentation at least 3 or 4 times before you actually deliver it. Do it in front of family, friends, a couple of colleagues, or even in the mirror. You can also video record yourself and watch it for critique purposes. But practice really does make perfect!
There are more tips that have helped me and I'd love to share them with you. You can find them in this quick video.
The naked truth is that nakedness should never be a part of your presentation in the corporate world. But if you remember who you are and why you're doing what you're doing, that negative and nervous energy will leave you.
