5 Expert Tips for Nailing Your Next Sales Pitch or Interview with Facial Cues and Body Language

Ever feel like your face is giving away more than you intended? Whether it’s a twitchy eyebrow or a nervous smile, those little facial cues might be saying things you didn’t even realize—especially during a pitch or interview. And it’s not just your face you need to watch—your hands are sending signals too!?

In this week’s episode of the Social Media Takeaway?(available on all the leading podcast platforms including iTunes and Spotify), I’m delighted to be joined by Joseph McGuire - Face Facts , a renowned facial analysis expert and human lie detector, who shares his unique insights into the power of reading faces and body language. He shares expert tips on how to keep your body language open, how to read the room, and how to make sure your facial expressions support your confidence. If you're gearing up for a big sales pitch or interview, these amazing tips from Joseph will help you nail it!?

  1. Preparation Is Key: Joseph emphasizes that interview success begins well before the actual meeting. He advises candidates to practice not only their responses but also their body language and facial expressions. Doing mock interviews or role-playing scenarios is crucial. This involves recording yourself to review later or working with someone who can provide feedback on how you come across. Pay attention to how you hold your body, how much you gesture, and whether your facial expressions align with what you're saying. Practicing until you feel comfortable helps eliminate nervous behaviors that may give the wrong impression. He also advises practicing under stress, as interviewers may switch tones or challenge you unexpectedly, and it's important to stay composed under pressure.
  2. Spotting Red Flags: While it’s important to present yourself well, Joseph also highlights the importance of reading the interviewer’s body language and facial expressions. For instance, if an interviewer is smiling, it doesn’t always mean they're interested—this could just signal that they're entertained. Instead, look for more telling signs like a thoughtful expression (stroking the chin or tilting the head) or someone leaning forward, which typically signals engagement and interest. Recognizing these signs allows you to adjust your delivery in real time. If the interviewer leans back or seems disengaged, this could be a cue to change your approach or reframe your answer to recapture their attention.
  3. Managing Your Body Language: Being aware of your own body language is just as important as interpreting the interviewer’s. Joseph recommends staying natural and avoiding stiff, forced gestures. For instance, open hand gestures show honesty and openness, whereas hiding your hands can signal distrust. When seated, keeping your hands visible and relaxed can make you appear more trustworthy. Be mindful of over-gesturing, as it can come across as nervous energy. Instead, make sure your movements are purposeful and calm, as this will help convey confidence and control.
  4. Facial Expressions Matter: Joseph underscores the power of facial expressions during an interview, especially when it comes to building rapport. A genuine smile—known as the Duchenne smile, where both your mouth and eyes smile—sends a positive signal and makes you appear approachable. Practice smiling in a natural, authentic way because a forced or social smile (only with the mouth) can appear disingenuous and could work against you. A genuine smile not only makes a great first impression but also helps to relax both you and the interviewer, making the interaction feel more comfortable and less formal.
  5. Respond to Interviewer Cues: Throughout the interview, it’s crucial to stay attuned to the interviewer’s reactions. If they seem to lose interest—leaning back, crossing their arms, or looking away—you may need to adjust your tone, change the direction of your answer, or ask a question to re-engage them. Joseph advises being able to think on your feet and respond quickly to changes in the interviewer’s body language. For instance, if they smile at something you said, consider whether it was a humorous comment or if they’re merely entertained but not interested. Quick thinking and the ability to adapt will help keep the interview on track and increase your chances of success.

So, the next time you're prepping for that big interview or pitch, remember: your face and hands are doing a lot more talking than you think! Keep those hands open, relax that smile (the real one, not the "bridesmaid" smile), and maybe give that twitchy eyebrow a break. If you want more tips on reading the room and nailing your body language, Joseph McGuire has you covered with his expert insights.
