Nail Your Next Interview - Thanks, Dune Part 2

Nail Your Next Interview - Thanks, Dune Part 2

Have you seen Dune Part 2?

No spoilers here, but my husband’s dream date night of Dim Sum + Dune Part 2 was FAR beyond my expectations! Not only was this my first time back to an AMC in years (those new seats!), but also my first leaving a movie so moved in years.

According to?Variety, the sequel collected $81.5 million in its domestic debut, marking the biggest opening weekend of 2024 so far – and the largest since Taylor Swift's concert film The Eras Tour ($93 million)! While there are many factors that contributed to these stats, there’s no denying the power of a compelling storyline, and Dune certainly delivered on that front! The movie not only drew me in and stole my attention but also left me wanting more, ultimately moving me in a profound way.

So, why is this relevant for you and I?

If storytelling is this impactful in moving people, then how can we utilize it in our own lives? Or, more importantly when interviewing?

When it comes to interviewing, I compare it to a sales pitch. You are the "product" and solution to your client’s (the company’s) problem. If we can properly use storytelling in interviews, we can more effectively engage and communicate our value to a potential hiring manager, thereby increasing our chances of landing that job and likely at pretty price point!

What does an effective story need to move an audience?

Donald Miller, NYT Bestselling Author and Founder of StoryBrand, lays this out in his 7-Principles of a StoryBrand Framework. They include:

  1. Define the customer’s desire (What is the hiring manager looking for?)
  2. Identify and address the problems (What problem is the company facing?)
  3. Present your brand as a guide (How can your experience help them reach a solution?)
  4. Outline the plan or process (How will you make this happen?)
  5. Create a compelling call to action (What more do they need from you?)
  6. Outline the risks of not acting (What are the risks of not having you solve their problem?)
  7. Describe the successful resolution (What benefits come from solving this problem?)

Bada Bing Bada Bomb. A STORY!

In a world where attention is the most precious commodity, storytelling stands as the ultimate currency, especially when interviewing. As I think back on my experience watching Dune Part 2, I’m reminded of the impact a well-crafted narrative can have. It’s not about the entertainment, but the connection and transformation that stories bring. By embracing the art of storytelling, we not only enhance our communication but also unlock the potential to take control of our career path!
